At Sāvatthī.
“นาหํ, ภิกฺขเว, อญฺญํ เอกธมฺมมฺปิ สมนุปสฺสามิ, เยน อนุปฺปนฺโน วา อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค อุปฺปชฺชติ, อุปฺปนฺโน วา อริโย อฏฺฐงฺคิโก มคฺโค ภาวนาปาริปูรึ คจฺฉติ, ยถยิทํ, ภิกฺขเว, กลฺยาณมิตฺตตาฯ กลฺยาณมิตฺตเสฺสตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน ปาฏิกงฺขํ—อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวสฺสติ, อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกริสฺสติฯ
“Bhikkhus, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to the noble eightfold path, or, if it’s already arisen, fully develops it like good friendship. A bhikkhu with good friends can expect to develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ กลฺยาณมิตฺโต อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวติ, อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกโรติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สมฺมาทิฏฺฐึ ภาเวติ วิเวกนิสฺสิตํ …เป… สมฺมาสมาธึ ภาเวติ วิเวกนิสฺสิตํ วิราคนิสฺสิตํ นิโรธนิสฺสิตํ โวสฺสคฺคปริณามึฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ กลฺยาณมิตฺโต อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ ภาเวติ, อริยํ อฏฺฐงฺคิกํ มคฺคํ พหุลีกโรตี”ติฯ
And how does a bhikkhu with good friends develop and cultivate the noble eightfold path? It’s when a bhikkhu develops right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi, which rely on seclusion, fading away, and cessation, and ripen as letting go. That’s how a bhikkhu with good friends develops and cultivates the noble eightfold path.”
