“เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, คงฺคา นที ปาจีนนินฺนา ปาจีนโปณา ปาจีนปพฺภารา; เอวเมว โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท ภาเวนฺโต จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท พหุลีกโรนฺโต นิพฺพานนินฺโน โหติ นิพฺพานโปโณ นิพฺพานปพฺภาโรฯ
“Bhikkhus, the Ganges river slants, slopes, and inclines to the east. In the same way, a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the four bases of psychic power slants, slopes, and inclines to Nibbana.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท ภาเวนฺโต จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท พหุลีกโรนฺโต นิพฺพานนินฺโน โหติ นิพฺพานโปโณ นิพฺพานปพฺภาโร? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ฉนฺทสมาธิปฺปธานสงฺขารสมนฺนาคตํ อิทฺธิปาทํ ภาเวติ, วีริยสมาธิ …เป… จิตฺตสมาธิ … วีมํสาสมาธิปฺปธานสงฺขารสมนฺนาคตํ อิทฺธิปาทํ ภาเวติฯ
And how does a bhikkhu who develops the four bases of psychic power slant, slope, and incline to Nibbana? It’s when a bhikkhu develops the basis of psychic power that has samādhi due to enthusiasm … energy … mental development … inquiry, and active effort.
เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท ภาเวนฺโต จตฺตาโร อิทฺธิปาเท พหุลีกโรนฺโต นิพฺพานนินฺโน โหติ นิพฺพานโปโณ นิพฺพานปพฺภาโร”ติฯ
That’s how a bhikkhu who develops and cultivates the four bases of psychic power slants, slopes, and inclines to Nibbana.”
ทฺวาทสมํฯ
คงฺคาเปยฺยาลวคฺโค จตุตฺโถฯ
ตสฺสุทฺทานํ
ฉ ปาจีนโต นินฺนา, ฉ นินฺนา จ สมุทฺทโต; เทฺวเต ฉ ทฺวาทส โหนฺติ, วคฺโค เตน ปวุจฺจตีติฯ
Six on slanting to the east, and six on slanting to the ocean; these two sixes make twelve, and that’s how this chapter is recited.
