Witless
अथ खो अञ्ञतरो भिक्खु येन भगवा तेनुपसङ्कमि …पे… एकमन्तं निसिन्नो खो सो भिक्खु भगवन्तं एतदवोच: “‘दुप्पञ्ञो एळमूगो, दुप्पञ्ञो एळमूगोऽति, भन्ते, वुच्चति। कित्तावता नु खो, भन्ते, ‘दुप्पञ्ञो एळमूगोऽति वुच्चती”ति?
Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami …pe… ekamantaṁ nisinno kho so bhikkhu bhagavantaṁ etadavoca: “‘duppañño eḷamūgo, duppañño eḷamūgo’ti, bhante, vuccati. Kittāvatā nu kho, bhante, ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccatī”ti?
Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha … and asked him, “Sir, they speak of ‘a witless idiot’. How is a witless idiot defined?”
“सत्तन्नं खो, भिक्खु, बोज्झङ्गानं अभावितत्ता अबहुलीकतत्ता ‘दुप्पञ्ञो एळमूगोऽति वुच्चति। कतमेसं सत्तन्नं? सतिसम्बोज्झङ्गस्स …पे… उपेक्खासम्बोज्झङ्गस्स—इमेसं खो, भिक्खु, सत्तन्नं बोज्झङ्गानं अभावितत्ता अबहुलीकतत्ता ‘दुप्पञ्ञो एळमूगोऽति वुच्चती”ति।
“Sattannaṁ kho, bhikkhu, bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccati. Katamesaṁ sattannaṁ? Satisambojjhaṅgassa …pe… upekkhāsambojjhaṅgassa—imesaṁ kho, bhikkhu, sattannaṁ bojjhaṅgānaṁ abhāvitattā abahulīkatattā ‘duppañño eḷamūgo’ti vuccatī”ti.
“Bhikkhu, they’re called a witless idiot because they haven’t developed and cultivated the seven awakening factors. What seven? The awakening factors of mindfulness, investigation of principles, energy, (mental) joy, tranquility, samādhi, and equanimity. They’re called a witless idiot because they haven’t developed and cultivated these seven awakening factors.”
