เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ เตน โข ปน สมเยน สมฺพหุลา ภิกฺขู ปจฺฉาภตฺตํ ปิณฺฑปาตปฏิกฺกนฺตา อุปฏฺฐานสาลายํ สนฺนิสินฺนา สนฺนิปติตา ภณฺฑนชาตา กลหชาตา วิวาทาปนฺนา อญฺญมญฺญํ มุขสตฺตีหิ วิตุทนฺตา วิหรนฺติฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. Now at that time, after the meal, on return from almsround, several bhikkhus sat together in the assembly hall. They were arguing, quarreling, and disputing, wounding each other with barbed words.
อถ โข ภควา สายนฺหสมยํ ปฏิสลฺลานา วุฏฺฐิโต เยน อุปฏฺฐานสาลา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน นิสีทิฯ นิสชฺช โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “กาย นุตฺถ, ภิกฺขเว, เอตรหิ กถาย สนฺนิสินฺนา สนฺนิปติตา, กา จ ปน โว อนฺตรากถา วิปฺปกตา”ติ?
Then in the late afternoon, the Buddha came out of retreat and went to the assembly hall. He sat down on the seat spread out, and addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, what were you sitting talking about just now? What conversation was left unfinished?”
“อิธ มยํ, ภนฺเต, ปจฺฉาภตฺตํ ปิณฺฑปาตปฏิกฺกนฺตา อุปฏฺฐานสาลายํ สนฺนิสินฺนา สนฺนิปติตา ภณฺฑนชาตา กลหชาตา วิวาทาปนฺนา อญฺญมญฺญํ มุขสตฺตีหิ วิตุทนฺตา วิหรามา”ติฯ
“Sir, after the meal, on return from almsround, we sat together in the assembly hall, arguing, quarreling, and disputing, wounding each other with barbed words.”
“น โข ปเนตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ตุมฺหากํ ปติรูปํ กุลปุตฺตานํ สทฺธาย อคารสฺมา อนคาริยํ ปพฺพชิตานํ, ยํ ตุเมฺห ภณฺฑนชาตา กลหชาตา วิวาทาปนฺนา อญฺญมญฺญํ มุขสตฺตีหิ วิตุทนฺตา วิหเรยฺยาถฯ
“Bhikkhus, this is not appropriate for you gentlemen who have gone forth in faith from the lay life to homelessness.
ทสยิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมา สารณียา ปิยกรณา ครุกรณา สงฺคหาย อวิวาทาย สามคฺคิยา เอกีภาวาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ทส? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ, ปาติโมกฺขสํวรสํวุโต วิหรติ อาจารโคจรสมฺปนฺโน อณุมตฺเตสุ วชฺเชสุ ภยทสฺสาวี, สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุฯ ยมฺปิ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ …เป… สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุ, อยมฺปิ ธมฺโม สารณีโย ปิยกรโณ ครุกรโณ สงฺคหาย อวิวาทาย สามคฺคิยา เอกีภาวาย สํวตฺตติฯ
There are ten warm-hearted qualities that make for fondness and respect, conducing to inclusion, harmony, and unity, without quarreling. What ten? Firstly, a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. When a bhikkhu is ethical, this warm-hearted quality makes for fondness and respect, conducing to inclusion, harmony, and unity, without quarreling.

Furthermore, a bhikkhu is very learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s entirely full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reinforcing them by recitation, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically. …

Furthermore, a bhikkhu is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. When a bhikkhu is wise, this warm-hearted quality makes for fondness and respect, helping the Saṅgha to live in harmony and unity, without quarreling.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ทส ธมฺมา สารณียา ปิยกรณา ครุกรณา สงฺคหาย อวิวาทาย สามคฺคิยา เอกีภาวาย สํวตฺตนฺตี”ติฯ
