A Question About the Signless
“‘อนิมิตฺโต เจโตสมาธิ, อนิมิตฺโต เจโตสมาธี'ติ วุจฺจติฯ กตโม นุ โข อนิมิตฺโต เจโตสมาธีติ? ตสฺส มยฺหํ, อาวุโส, เอตทโหสิ: ‘อิธ ภิกฺขุ สพฺพนิมิตฺตานํ อมนสิการา อนิมิตฺตํ เจโตสมาธึ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ อนิมิตฺโต เจโตสมาธี'ติฯ
“They speak of this thing called the ‘signless samādhi of the mind’. What is the signless samādhi of the mind? It occurred to me: ‘It’s when a bhikkhu, not focusing on any signs, enters and remains in the signless samādhi of the mind. This is called the signless samādhi of the mind.’
โส ขฺวาหํ, อาวุโส, สพฺพนิมิตฺตานํ อมนสิการา อนิมิตฺตํ เจโตสมาธึ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรามิฯ ตสฺส มยฺหํ, อาวุโส, อิมินา วิหาเรน วิหรโต นิมิตฺตานุสาริ วิญฺญาณํ โหติฯ
And so … I was entering and remaining in the signless samādhi of the mind. While I was in that meditation, my consciousness followed after signs.
อถ โข มํ, อาวุโส, ภควา อิทฺธิยา อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา เอตทโวจ: ‘โมคฺคลฺลาน, โมคฺคลฺลานฯ มา, พฺราหฺมณ, อนิมิตฺตํ เจโตสมาธึ ปมาโท, อนิมิตฺเต เจโตสมาธิสฺมึ จิตฺตํ สณฺฐเปหิ, อนิมิตฺเต เจโตสมาธิสฺมึ จิตฺตํ เอโกทึ กโรหิ, อนิมิตฺเต เจโตสมาธิสฺมึ จิตฺตํ สมาทหา'ติฯ
Then the Buddha came up to me with his psychic power and said, ‘Moggallāna, Moggallāna! Don’t neglect the signless samādhi of the mind, brahmin! Settle your mind in the signless samādhi of the mind; unify your mind and immerse it in the signless samādhi of the mind.’
โส ขฺวาหํ, อาวุโส, อปเรน สมเยน สพฺพนิมิตฺตานํ อมนสิการา อนิมิตฺตํ เจโตสมาธึ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหาสึฯ
And so, after some time … I entered and remained in the signless samādhi of the mind.
ยญฺหิ ตํ, อาวุโส, สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺย: ‘สตฺถารานุคฺคหิโต สาวโก มหาภิญฺญตํ ปตฺโต'ติ, มมํ ตํ สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺย: ‘สตฺถารานุคฺคหิโต สาวโก มหาภิญฺญตํ ปตฺโต'”ติฯ
So if anyone should be rightly called a disciple who attained to great direct knowledge with help from the Teacher, it’s me.”
