အာဇီဝကသုတ္တ
A Disciple of the Ājīvakas
ဧကံ သမယံ အာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော ကောသမ္ဗိယံ ဝိဟရတိ ဃောသိတာရာမေ၊ အထ ခေါ အညတရော အာဇီဝကသာဝကော ဂဟပတိ ယေနာယသ္မာ အာနန္ဒော တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ အာယသ္မန္တံ အာနန္ဒံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ သော အာဇီဝကသာဝကော ဂဟပတိ အာယသ္မန္တံ အာနန္ဒံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
At one time Venerable Ānanda was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery. Then a householder who was a disciple of the Ājīvaka ascetics went up to Venerable Ānanda, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to Ānanda:
“ကေသံ နော, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, ဓမ္မော သွာက္ခာတော? ကေ လောကေ သုပ္ပဋိပန္နာ? ကေ လောကေ သုကတာ”တိ?
“Honorable Ānanda, whose teaching is well explained? Who in the world is practicing well? Who in the world has done well?”
“တေန ဟိ, ဂဟပတိ, တညေဝေတ္ထ ပဋိပုစ္ဆိဿာမိ, ယထာ တေ ခမေယျ တထာ နံ ဗျာကရေယျာသိ၊ တံ ကိံ မညသိ, ဂဟပတိ, ယေ ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, တေသံ ဓမ္မော သွာက္ခာတော နော ဝါ? ကထံ ဝါ တေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ?
“Well then, householder, I’ll ask you about this in return, and you can answer as you like. What do you think, householder? Is the teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion well explained or not? Or how do you see this?”
“ယေ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, တေသံ ဓမ္မော သွာက္ခာတော၊ ဧဝံ မေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ၊
“The teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained. That’s how I see it.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, ဂဟပတိ, ယေ ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, တေ လောကေ သုပ္ပဋိပန္နာ နော ဝါ? ကထံ ဝါ တေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ?
“What do you think, householder? Are those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion practicing well or not? Or how do you see this?”
“ယေ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, တေ လောကေ သုပ္ပဋိပန္နာ၊ ဧဝံ မေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ၊
“Those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well. That’s how I see it.”
“တံ ကိံ မညသိ, ဂဟပတိ, ယေသံ ရာဂေါ ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, ယေသံ ဒေါသော ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, ယေသံ မောဟော ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, တေ လောကေ သုကတာ နော ဝါ? ကထံ ဝါ တေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ?
“What do you think, householder? Have those who’ve given up greed, hate, and delusion—so they’re cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future—done well in the world, or not? Or how do you see this?”
“ယေသံ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂေါ ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, ယေသံ ဒေါသော ပဟီနော …ပေ… ယေသံ မောဟော ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, တေ လောကေ သုကတာ၊ ဧဝံ မေ ဧတ္ထ ဟောတီ”တိ၊
“Those who’ve given up greed, hate, and delusion have done well in the world. That’s how I see it.”
“ဣတိ ခေါ, ဂဟပတိ, တယာဝေတံ ဗျာကတံ: ‘ယေ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေန္တိ, တေသံ ဓမ္မော သွာက္ခာတော'တိ၊ တယာဝေတံ ဗျာကတံ: ‘ယေ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, ဒေါသဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, တေ လောကေ သုပ္ပဋိပန္နာ'တိ၊ တယာဝေတံ ဗျာကတံ: ‘ယေသံ, ဘန္တေ, ရာဂေါ ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, ယေသံ ဒေါသော ပဟီနော …ပေ… ယေသံ မောဟော ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, တေ လောကေ သုကတာ'”တိ၊
“So, householder, you’ve declared: ‘The teaching of those who teach for giving up greed, hate, and delusion is well explained.’ And you’ve declared: ‘Those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well.’ And you’ve declared: ‘Those who’ve given up greed, hate, and delusion have done well in the world.’”
“အစ္ဆရိယံ, ဘန္တေ, အဗ္ဘုတံ, ဘန္တေ၊ န စေဝ နာမ သဓမ္မုက္ကံသနာ ဘဝိဿတိ, န စ ပရဓမ္မာပသာဒနာ၊ အာယတနေဝ ဓမ္မဒေသနာ, အတ္ထော စ ဝုတ္တော, အတ္တာ စ အနုပနီတော၊ တုမှေ, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေထ, ဒေါသဿ …ပေ… မောဟဿ ပဟနာယ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေထ၊ တုမှာကံ, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, ဓမ္မော သွာက္ခာတော၊ တုမှေ, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, ရာဂဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ, ဒေါသဿ …ပေ… မောဟဿ ပဟာနာယ ပဋိပန္နာ၊ တုမှေ, ဘန္တေ, လောကေ သုပ္ပဋိပန္နာ၊ တုမှာကံ, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, ရာဂေါ ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော, တုမှာကံ ဒေါသော ပဟီနော …ပေ… တုမှာကံ မောဟော ပဟီနော ဥစ္ဆိန္နမူလော တာလာဝတ္ထုကတော အနဘာဝင်္ကတော အာယတိံ အနုပ္ပါဒဓမ္မော၊ တုမှေ လောကေ သုကတာ၊
“It’s incredible, sir, it’s amazing! There’s no acclaiming your own teaching or disrespecting someone else’s, just teaching what’s relevant in that context. The goal is spoken of, but the self is not involved. You, sir, teach Dhamma for giving up greed, hate, and delusion. Your teaching is well explained. You, sir, practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion. You in the world are practicing well. You’ve given up greed, hate, and delusion. You in the world have done well.
အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘန္တေ, အဘိက္ကန္တံ, ဘန္တေ၊ သေယျထာပိ, ဘန္တေ, နိက္ကုဇ္ဇိတံ ဝါ ဥက္ကုဇ္ဇေယျ, ပဋိစ္ဆန္နံ ဝါ ဝိဝရေယျ, မူဠှဿ ဝါ မဂ္ဂံ အာစိက္ခေယျ, အန္ဓကာရေ ဝါ တေလပဇ္ဇောတံ ဓာရေယျ: ‘စက္ခုမန္တော ရူပါနိ ဒက္ခန္တီ'တိ; ဧဝမေဝံ အယျေန အာနန္ဒေန အနေကပရိယာယေန ဓမ္မော ပကာသိတော၊ ဧသာဟံ, ဘန္တေ အာနန္ဒ, တံ ဘဂဝန္တံ သရဏံ ဂစ္ဆာမိ ဓမ္မဉ္စ ဘိက္ခုသင်္ဃဉ္စ၊ ဥပါသကံ မံ အယျော အာနန္ဒော ဓာရေတု, အဇ္ဇတဂ္ဂေ ပါဏုပေတံ သရဏံ ဂတန်”တိ၊
Excellent, sir! Excellent! As if he were righting the overturned, or revealing the hidden, or pointing out the path to the lost, or lighting a lamp in the dark so people with clear eyes can see what’s there, Venerable Ānanda has made the teaching clear in many ways. I go for refuge to the Buddha, to the teaching, and to the bhikkhu Saṅgha. From this day forth, may Venerable Ānanda remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
