Analysis

သာဝတ္ထိယံ ဝိဟရတိ၊

At Sāvatthī.

“ပဋိစ္စသမုပ္ပါဒံ ဝေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဒေသေဿာမိ ဝိဘဇိဿာမိ၊ တံ သုဏာထ, သာဓုကံ မနသိ ကရောထ, ဘာသိဿာမီ”တိ၊

“Bhikkhus, I will teach and analyze for you dependent origination. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ တေ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော ပစ္စဿောသုံ၊ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

“ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပဋိစ္စသမုပ္ပါဒေါ? အဝိဇ္ဇာပစ္စယာ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သင်္ခါရာ; သင်္ခါရပစ္စယာ ဝိညာဏံ; ဝိညာဏပစ္စယာ နာမရူပံ; နာမရူပပစ္စယာ သဠာယတနံ; သဠာယတနပစ္စယာ ဖဿော; ဖဿပစ္စယာ ဝေဒနာ; ဝေဒနာပစ္စယာ တဏှာ; တဏှာပစ္စယာ ဥပါဒါနံ; ဥပါဒါနပစ္စယာ ဘဝေါ; ဘဝပစ္စယာ ဇာတိ; ဇာတိပစ္စယာ ဇရာမရဏံ သောကပရိဒေဝဒုက္ခဒေါမနဿုပါယာသာ သမ္ဘဝန္တိ၊ ဧဝမေတဿ ကေဝလဿ ဒုက္ခက္ခန္ဓဿ သမုဒယော ဟောတိ၊

“And what is dependent origination? Ignorance is a condition for functioning patterns. Functioning patterns are a condition for consciousness. Consciousness is a condition for name and form. Name and form are conditions for the six sense fields. The six sense fields are conditions for contact. Contact is a condition for feeling. Feeling is a condition for craving. Craving is a condition for grasping. Grasping is a condition for continued existence. Continued existence is a condition for rebirth. Rebirth is a condition for old age and death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress to come to be. That is how this entire mass of suffering originates.

ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဇရာမရဏံ? ယာ တေသံ တေသံ သတ္တာနံ တမှိ တမှိ သတ္တနိကာယေ ဇရာ ဇီရဏတာ ခဏ္ဍိစ္စံ ပါလိစ္စံ ဝလိတ္တစတာ အာယုနော သံဟာနိ ဣန္ဒြိယာနံ ပရိပါကော; အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ ဇရာ၊ ယာ တေသံ တေသံ သတ္တာနံ တမှာ တမှာ သတ္တနိကာယာ စုတိ စဝနတာ ဘေဒေါ အန္တရဓာနံ မစ္စု မရဏံ ကာလကိရိယာ ခန္ဓာနံ ဘေဒေါ ကဠေဝရဿ နိက္ခေပေါ (…), ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ မရဏံ၊ ဣတိ အယဉ္စ ဇရာ, ဣဒဉ္စ မရဏံ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဇရာမရဏံ၊

And what is old age and death? The old age, decrepitude, broken teeth, grey hair, wrinkly skin, diminished vitality, and failing faculties of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called old age. The passing away, perishing, disintegration, demise, mortality, death, decease, breaking up of the aggregates, and laying to rest of the corpse of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called death. Such is old age, and such is death. This is called old age and death.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဇာတိ? ယာ တေသံ တေသံ သတ္တာနံ တမှိ တမှိ သတ္တနိကာယေ ဇာတိ သဉ္ဇာတိ ဩက္ကန္တိ အဘိနိဗ္ဗတ္တိ ခန္ဓာနံ ပါတုဘာဝေါ အာယတနာနံ ပဋိလာဘော၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဇာတိ၊

And what is rebirth? The rebirth, inception, conception, reincarnation, manifestation of the aggregates, and acquisition of the sense fields of the various sentient beings in the various orders of sentient beings. This is called rebirth.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘဝေါ? တယောမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘဝါ—ကာမဘဝေါ, ရူပဘဝေါ, အရူပဘဝေါ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘဝေါ၊

And what is continued existence? There are these three states of existence. Existence in the sensual realm, the realm of luminous form, and the formless realm. This is called continued existence.

ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပါဒါနံ? စတ္တာရိမာနိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပါဒါနာနိ—ကာမုပါဒါနံ, ဒိဋ္ဌုပါဒါနံ, သီလဗ္ဗတုပါဒါနံ, အတ္တဝါဒုပါဒါနံ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဥပါဒါနံ၊

And what is grasping? There are these four kinds of grasping. Grasping at sensual pleasures, views, precepts and observances, and theories of a self. This is called grasping.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တဏှာ? ဆယိမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တဏှာကာယာ—ရူပတဏှာ, သဒ္ဒတဏှာ, ဂန္ဓတဏှာ, ရသတဏှာ, ဖောဋ္ဌဗ္ဗတဏှာ, ဓမ္မတဏှာ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တဏှာ၊

And what is craving? There are these six classes of craving. Craving for sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touches, and thoughts. This is called craving.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝေဒနာ? ဆယိမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝေဒနာကာယာ—စက္ခုသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ, သောတသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ, ဃာနသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ, ဇိဝှါသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ, ကာယသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ, မနောသမ္ဖဿဇာ ဝေဒနာ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝေဒနာ၊

And what is feeling? There are these six classes of feeling. Feeling born of contact through the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. This is called feeling.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဖဿော? ဆယိမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဖဿကာယာ—စက္ခုသမ္ဖဿော, သောတသမ္ဖဿော, ဃာနသမ္ဖဿော, ဇိဝှါသမ္ဖဿော, ကာယသမ္ဖဿော, မနောသမ္ဖဿော၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဖဿော၊

And what is contact? There are these six classes of contact. Contact through the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. This is called contact.

ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သဠာယတနံ? စက္ခာယတနံ, သောတာယတနံ, ဃာနာယတနံ, ဇိဝှါယတနံ, ကာယာယတနံ, မနာယတနံ—ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သဠာယတနံ၊

And what are the six sense fields? The sense fields of the eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind. These are called the six sense fields.

ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, နာမရူပံ? ဝေဒနာ, သညာ, စေတနာ, ဖဿော, မနသိကာရော—ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ နာမံ၊ စတ္တာရော စ မဟာဘူတာ, စတုန္နဉ္စ မဟာဘူတာနံ ဥပါဒါယရူပံ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ ရူပံ၊ ဣတိ ဣဒဉ္စ နာမံ, ဣဒဉ္စ ရူပံ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, နာမရူပံ၊

And what are name and form? Feeling, perception, intention, contact, and application of mind. This is called name. The four primary elements, and form derived from the four primary elements. This is called form. Such is name and such is form. These are called name and form.

ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝိညာဏံ? ဆယိမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝိညာဏကာယာ—စက္ခုဝိညာဏံ, သောတဝိညာဏံ, ဃာနဝိညာဏံ, ဇိဝှါဝိညာဏံ, ကာယဝိညာဏံ, မနောဝိညာဏံ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝိညာဏံ၊

And what is consciousness? There are these six classes of consciousness. Eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, and mind consciousness. This is called consciousness.

ကတမေ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သင်္ခါရာ? တယောမေ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သင်္ခါရာ—ကာယသင်္ခါရော, ဝစီသင်္ခါရော, စိတ္တသင်္ခါရော၊ ဣမေ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သင်္ခါရာ၊

And what are functioning patterns? There are three kinds of functioning patterns. Habitual functioning patterns of the body, speech, and mind. These are called functioning patterns.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဝိဇ္ဇာ? ယံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဒုက္ခေ အညာဏံ, ဒုက္ခသမုဒယေ အညာဏံ, ဒုက္ခနိရောဓေ အညာဏံ, ဒုက္ခနိရောဓဂါမိနိယာ ပဋိပဒါယ အညာဏံ၊ အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဝိဇ္ဇာ၊

And what is ignorance? Not knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. This is called ignorance.

ဣတိ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဝိဇ္ဇာပစ္စယာ သင်္ခါရာ;

And so, ignorance is a condition for functioning patterns.

သင်္ခါရပစ္စယာ ဝိညာဏံ …ပေ… ဧဝမေတဿ ကေဝလဿ ဒုက္ခက္ခန္ဓဿ သမုဒယော ဟောတိ၊ အဝိဇ္ဇာယ တွေဝ အသေသဝိရာဂနိရောဓာ သင်္ခါရနိရောဓော; သင်္ခါရနိရောဓာ ဝိညာဏနိရောဓော …ပေ… ဧဝမေတဿ ကေဝလဿ ဒုက္ခက္ခန္ဓဿ နိရောဓော ဟောတီ”တိ၊

Functioning patterns are a condition for consciousness. … That is how this entire mass of suffering originates. When ignorance fades away and ceases with nothing left over, functioning patterns cease. When functioning patterns cease, consciousness ceases. … That is how this entire mass of suffering ceases.”
