The Chapter on Happiness

“ဒွေမာနိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သုခါနိ၊ ကတမာနိ ဒွေ? ဂိဟိသုခဉ္စ ပဗ္ဗဇိတသုခဉ္စ၊ ဣမာနိ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဒွေ သုခါနိ၊ ဧတဒဂ္ဂံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဣမေသံ ဒွိန္နံ သုခါနံ ယဒိဒံ ပဗ္ဗဇိတသုခန်”တိ၊
“There are, bhikkhus, these two kinds of happiness. What two? The happiness of laypeople, and the happiness of renunciates. These are the two kinds of happiness. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of renunciates.”

“There are, bhikkhus, these two kinds of happiness. What two? (Bodily) pleasure with (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure free of (mental) joy. These are the two kinds of happiness. The better of these two kinds of (bodily) pleasure is (bodily) pleasure free of (mental) joy.”

“There are, bhikkhus, these two kinds of happiness. What two? The happiness of samādhi and the happiness without samādhi. These are the two kinds of happiness. The better of these two kinds of happiness is the happiness of samādhi.”

These are the two kinds of happiness. The better of these two kinds of (bodily) pleasure is (bodily) pleasure that relies on freedom from (mental) joy.”
