Kings
“ตํ กึ มญฺญถ, ภิกฺขเว, อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา: ‘อยํ ปุริโส ปาณาติปาตํ ปหาย ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา ปาณาติปาตา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'”ติ?
“What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up killing living creatures, and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”
“โน เหตํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“No, sir.”
“สาธุ, ภิกฺขเวฯ มยาปิ โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, เนว ทิฏฺฐํ น สุตํ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส ปาณาติปาตํ ปหาย ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา ปาณาติปาตา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'ติฯ อปิ จ ขฺวสฺส ตเถว ปาปกมฺมํ ปเวเทนฺติ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส อิตฺถึ วา ปุริสํ วา ชีวิตา โวโรเปสีติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา ปาณาติปาตเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺติฯ อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ เอวรูปํ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา'”ติ?
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person has murdered a man or a woman.’ Then the kings have them arrested for killing, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires. Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”
“ทิฏฺฐญฺจ โน, ภนฺเต, สุตญฺจ สุยฺยิสฺสติ จา”ติฯ
“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”
“ตํ กึ มญฺญถ, ภิกฺขเว, อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา: ‘อยํ ปุริโส อทินฺนาทานํ ปหาย อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา อทินฺนาทานา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'”ติ?
“What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up stealing, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”
“โน เหตํ ภนฺเต”ฯ
“No, sir.”
“สาธุ, ภิกฺขเวฯ มยาปิ โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, เนว ทิฏฺฐํ น สุตํ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส อทินฺนาทานํ ปหาย อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา อทินฺนาทานา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'ติฯ อปิ จ ขฺวสฺส ตเถว ปาปกมฺมํ ปเวเทนฺติ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส คามา วา อรญฺญา วา อทินฺนํ เถยฺยสงฺขาตํ อาทิยีติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา อทินฺนาทานเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺติฯ อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ เอวรูปํ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา'”ติ?
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person took something from a village or wilderness, with the intention to commit theft.’ Then the kings have them arrested for stealing … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”
“ทิฏฺฐญฺจ โน, ภนฺเต, สุตญฺจ สุยฺยิสฺสติ จา”ติฯ
“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”
“ตํ กึ มญฺญถ, ภิกฺขเว, อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา: ‘อยํ ปุริโส กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารํ ปหาย กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'”ติ?
“What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up sexual misconduct, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”
“โน เหตํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“No, sir.”
“สาธุ, ภิกฺขเวฯ มยาปิ โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, เนว ทิฏฺฐํ น สุตํ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารํ ปหาย กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'ติฯ อปิ จ ขฺวสฺส ตเถว ปาปกมฺมํ ปเวเทนฺติ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส ปริตฺถีสุ ปรกุมารีสุ จาริตฺตํ อาปชฺชีติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺติฯ อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ เอวรูปํ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา'”ติ?
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection.’ Then the kings have them arrested for that … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”
“ทิฏฺฐญฺจ โน, ภนฺเต, สุตญฺจ สุยฺยิสฺสติ จา”ติฯ
“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”
“ตํ กึ มญฺญถ, ภิกฺขเว, อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา: ‘อยํ ปุริโส มุสาวาทํ ปหาย มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา มุสาวาทา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'”ติ?
“What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up lying, and then the kings have them arrested for that …?”

“สาธุ, ภิกฺขเวฯ มยาปิ โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, เนว ทิฏฺฐํ น สุตํ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส มุสาวาทํ ปหาย มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา มุสาวาทา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'ติฯ อปิ จ ขฺวสฺส ตเถว ปาปกมฺมํ ปเวเทนฺติ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส คหปติสฺส วา คหปติปุตฺตสฺส วา มุสาวาเทน อตฺถํ ปภญฺชีติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา มุสาวาทเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺติฯ อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ เอวรูปํ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา'”ติ?
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘This person has ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’ Then the kings have them arrested for that … Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”
“ทิฏฺฐญฺจ โน, ภนฺเต, สุตญฺจ สุยฺยิสฺสติ จา”ติฯ
“Sir, we have seen it and heard of it, and we will hear of it again.”
“ตํ กึ มญฺญถ, ภิกฺขเว, อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา: ‘อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ ปหาย สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'”ติ?
“What do you think, bhikkhus? Have you ever seen or heard of a person who has given up alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, and then the kings have them arrested for that, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires?”
“โน เหตํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“No, sir.”
“สาธุ, ภิกฺขเวฯ มยาปิ โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, เนว ทิฏฺฐํ น สุตํ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ ปหาย สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรโตติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา เวรมณิเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺตี'ติฯ อปิ จ ขฺวสฺส ตเถว ปาปกมฺมํ ปเวเทนฺติ: ‘อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ อนุยุตฺโต อิตฺถึ วา ปุริสํ วา ชีวิตา โวโรเปสิ; อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ อนุยุตฺโต คามา วา อรญฺญา วา อทินฺนํ เถยฺยสงฺขาตํ อาทิยิ; อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ อนุยุตฺโต ปริตฺถีสุ ปรกุมารีสุ จาริตฺตํ อาปชฺชิ; อยํ ปุริโส สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานํ อนุยุตฺโต คหปติสฺส วา คหปติปุตฺตสฺส วา มุสาวาเทน อตฺถํ ปภญฺชีติฯ ตเมนํ ราชาโน คเหตฺวา สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานเหตุ หนนฺติ วา พนฺธนฺติ วา ปพฺพาเชนฺติ วา ยถาปจฺจยํ วา กโรนฺติฯ อปิ นุ ตุเมฺหหิ เอวรูปํ ทิฏฺฐํ วา สุตํ วา'”ติ?
“Good, bhikkhus! I too have never seen or heard of such a thing. Rather, the kings are informed of someone’s bad deed: ‘While under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, this person murdered a woman or a man. Or they stole something from a village or wilderness. Or they had sexual relations with women or maidens under someone else’s protection. Or they ruined a householder or householder’s child by lying.’ Then the kings have them arrested for being under the influence of alcoholic drinks that cause negligence, and execute, imprison, or banish them, or do what the case requires. Have you ever seen or heard of such a case?”
