“ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อุปาสโก อุปาสกจณฺฑาโล จ โหติ อุปาสกมลญฺจ อุปาสกปติกุฏฺโฐ จฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? อสฺสทฺโธ โหติ; ทุสฺสีโล โหติ; โกตูหลมงฺคลิโก โหติ, มงฺคลํ ปจฺเจติ โน กมฺมํ; อิโต จ พหิทฺธา ทกฺขิเณยฺยํ คเวสติ; ตตฺถ จ ปุพฺพการํ กโรติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อุปาสโก อุปาสกจณฺฑาโล จ โหติ อุปาสกมลญฺจ อุปาสกปติกุฏฺโฐ จฯ
“Bhikkhus, a lay follower with five qualities is an outcaste, a stain, and a reject among lay followers. What five? They’re faithless. They’re unethical. They practice noisy, superstitious rites, believing in omens rather than deeds. They seek outside of the Buddhist community for those worthy of religious donations. And they make offerings there first. A lay follower with these five qualities is an outcaste, a stain, and a reject among lay followers.
ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อุปาสโก อุปาสกรตนญฺจ โหติ อุปาสกปทุมญฺจ อุปาสกปุณฺฑรีกญฺจฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? สทฺโธ โหติ; สีลวา โหติ; อโกตูหลมงฺคลิโก โหติ, กมฺมํ ปจฺเจติ โน มงฺคลํ; น อิโต พหิทฺธา ทกฺขิเณยฺยํ คเวสติ; อิธ จ ปุพฺพการํ กโรติฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต อุปาสโก อุปาสกรตนญฺจ โหติ อุปาสกปทุมญฺจ อุปาสกปุณฺฑรีกญฺจา”ติฯ
A lay follower with five qualities is a gem, a pink lotus, and a white lotus among lay followers. What five? They’re faithful. They’re ethical. They don’t practice noisy, superstitious rites, and believe in deeds rather than omens. They don’t seek outside of the Buddhist community for those worthy of religious donations. And they don’t make offerings there first. A lay follower with these five qualities is a gem, a pink lotus, and a white lotus among lay followers.”
