ปฐมหตฺถกสุตฺต
With Hatthaka (1st)
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา อาฬวิยํ วิหรติ อคฺคาฬเว เจติเยฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Āḷavī, at the Aggāḷava Tree-shrine. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus:
“สตฺตหิ, ภิกฺขเว, อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคตํ หตฺถกํ อาฬวกํ ธาเรถฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? สทฺโธ หิ, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; สีลวา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; หิรีมา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; โอตฺตปฺปี, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; พหุสฺสุโต, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; จาควา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; ปญฺญวา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก—อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, สตฺตหิ อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคตํ หตฺถกํ อาฬวกํ ธาเรถา”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, you should remember the householder Hatthaka of Āḷavī as someone who has seven amazing and incredible qualities. What seven? He’s faithful, ethical, conscientious, prudent, learned, generous, and wise. You should remember the householder Hatthaka of Āḷavī as someone who has these seven amazing and incredible qualities.”
อิทมโวจ ภควาฯ อิทํ วตฺวาน สุคโต อุฏฺฐายาสนา วิหารํ ปาวิสิฯ
That is what the Buddha said. When he had spoken, the Holy One got up from his seat and entered his dwelling.
อถ โข อญฺญตโร ภิกฺขุ ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย เยน หตฺถกสฺส อาฬวกสฺส นิเวสนํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน นิสีทิฯ อถ โข หตฺถโก อาฬวโก เยน โส ภิกฺขุ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ตํ ภิกฺขุํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข หตฺถกํ อาฬวกํ โส ภิกฺขุ เอตทโวจ:
Then a certain bhikkhu robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the householder Hatthaka of Āḷavī, where he sat on the seat spread out. Then Hatthaka went up to that bhikkhu, bowed, and sat down to one side. The bhikkhu said to Hatthaka:
“สตฺตหิ โข ตฺวํ, อาวุโส, อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภควตา พฺยากโตฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? ‘สทฺโธ, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; สีลวา …เป… หิรีมา … โอตฺตปฺปี … พหุสฺสุโต … จาควา … ปญฺญวา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก'ติฯ อิเมหิ โข ตฺวํ, อาวุโส, สตฺตหิ อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภควตา พฺยากโต”ติฯ
“Householder, the Buddha declared that you have seven amazing and incredible qualities. What seven? He said that you’re faithful, ethical, conscientious, prudent, learned, generous, and wise. The Buddha declared that you have these seven amazing and incredible qualities.”
“กจฺจิตฺถ, ภนฺเต, น โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน”ติ?
“But sir, I trust that no white-clothed lay people were present?”
“น เหตฺถ, อาวุโส, โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน”ติฯ
“No, there weren’t any white-clothed lay people present.”
“สาธุ, ภนฺเต, ยเทตฺถ น โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน”ติฯ
“That’s good, sir.”
อถ โข โส ภิกฺขุ หตฺถกสฺส อาฬวกสฺส นิเวสเน ปิณฺฑปาตํ คเหตฺวา อุฏฺฐายาสนา ปกฺกามิฯ อถ โข โส ภิกฺขุ ปจฺฉาภตฺตํ ปิณฺฑปาตปฏิกฺกนฺโต เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข โส ภิกฺขุ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then that bhikkhu, after taking almsfood in Hatthaka of Āḷavī’s home, got up from his seat and left. Then after the meal, on his return from almsround, he went to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and told him of what he had discussed with the householder Hatthaka. The Buddha said:
“อิธาหํ, ภนฺเต, ปุพฺพณฺหสมยํ นิวาเสตฺวา ปตฺตจีวรมาทาย เยน หตฺถกสฺส อาฬวกสฺส นิเวสนํ เตนุปสงฺกมึ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ปญฺญตฺเต อาสเน นิสีทึฯ อถ โข, ภนฺเต, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก เยนาหํ เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา มํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อหํ, ภนฺเต, หตฺถกํ อาฬวกํ เอตทวจํ: ‘สตฺตหิ โข ตฺวํ, อาวุโส, อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภควตา พฺยากโตฯ กตเมหิ สตฺตหิ? สทฺโธ, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโก; สีลวา …เป… หิรีมา … โอตฺตปฺปี … พหุสฺสุโต … จาควา … ปญฺญวา, ภิกฺขเว, หตฺถโก อาฬวโกติฯ อิเมหิ โข ตฺวํ, อาวุโส, สตฺตหิ อจฺฉริเยหิ อพฺภุเตหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภควตา พฺยากโต'ติฯ
เอวํ วุตฺเต, ภนฺเต, หตฺถโก มํ เอตทโวจ: ‘กจฺจิตฺถ, ภนฺเต, น โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน'ติ? ‘น เหตฺถ, อาวุโส, โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน'ติฯ ‘สาธุ, ภนฺเต, ยเทตฺถ น โกจิ คิหี อโหสิ โอทาตวสโน'”ติฯ
“สาธุ สาธุ, ภิกฺขุฯ อปฺปิจฺโฉ โส, ภิกฺขุ, กุลปุตฺโตฯ สนฺเตเยว อตฺตนิ กุสลธมฺเม น อิจฺฉติ ปเรหิ ญายมาเนฯ เตน หิ ตฺวํ, ภิกฺขุ, อิมินาปิ อฏฺฐเมน อจฺฉริเยน อพฺภุเตน ธมฺเมน สมนฺนาคตํ หตฺถกํ อาฬวกํ ธาเรหิ, ยทิทํ อปฺปิจฺฉตายา”ติฯ
“Good, good, bhikkhu! That gentleman has few wishes. He doesn’t want his own good qualities to be made known to others. Well then, bhikkhu, you should remember the householder Hatthaka of Āḷavī as someone who has this eighth amazing and incredible quality, that is, fewness of wishes.”
