Stains
“อฏฺฐิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, มลานิฯ กตมานิ อฏฺฐ? อสชฺฌายมลา, ภิกฺขเว, มนฺตา; อนุฏฺฐานมลา, ภิกฺขเว, ฆรา; มลํ, ภิกฺขเว, วณฺณสฺส โกสชฺชํ; ปมาโท, ภิกฺขเว, รกฺขโต มลํ; มลํ, ภิกฺขเว, อิตฺถิยา ทุจฺจริตํ; มจฺเฉรํ, ภิกฺขเว, ททโต มลํ; มลา, ภิกฺขเว, ปาปกา อกุสลา ธมฺมา อสฺมึ โลเก ปรมฺหิ จ; ตโต, ภิกฺขเว, มลา มลตรํ อวิชฺชา ปรมํ มลํฯ อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อฏฺฐ มลานีติฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these eight stains. What eight? Not reciting is the stain of hymns. Neglect is the stain of houses. Laziness is the stain of beauty. Negligence is a guard’s stain. Misconduct is a woman’s stain. Stinginess is a giver’s stain. Bad, unskillful qualities are a stain in this world and the next. Worse than any of these is ignorance, the worst stain of all. These are the eight stains.
อสชฺฌายมลา มนฺตา, อนุฏฺฐานมลา ฆรา; มลํ วณฺณสฺส โกสชฺชํ, ปมาโท รกฺขโต มลํฯ
Not reciting is the stain of hymns. The stain of houses is neglect. Laziness is the stain of beauty. A guard’s stain is negligence.
มลิตฺถิยา ทุจฺจริตํ, มจฺเฉรํ ททโต มลํ; มลา เว ปาปกา ธมฺมา, อสฺมึ โลเก ปรมฺหิ จ; ตโต มลา มลตรํ, อวิชฺชา ปรมํ มลนฺ”ติฯ
Misconduct is a woman’s stain. A giver’s stain is stinginess. Bad qualities are a stain in this world and the next. But a worse stain than these is ignorance, the worst stain of all.”
