The Decline of the True Teaching (2nd)
“ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมา สทฺธมฺมสฺส สมฺโมสาย อนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
“Bhikkhus, these five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching. What five?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขู ธมฺมํ น ปริยาปุณนฺติ—สุตฺตํ, เคยฺยํ, เวยฺยากรณํ, คาถํ, อุทานํ, อิติวุตฺตกํ, ชาตกํ, อพฺภุตธมฺมํ, เวทลฺลํฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม ธมฺโม สทฺธมฺมสฺส สมฺโมสาย อนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตติฯ
It’s when the bhikkhus don’t memorize the teaching—statements, songs, discussions, verses, inspired exclamations, legends, stories of past lives, amazing stories, and classifications. This is the first thing that leads to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.
ปุน จปรํ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขู ยถาสุตํ ยถาปริยตฺตํ ธมฺมํ น วิตฺถาเรน ปเรสํ เทเสนฺติฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุติโย ธมฺโม สทฺธมฺมสฺส สมฺโมสาย อนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตติฯ

อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจ ธมฺมา สทฺธมฺมสฺส สมฺโมสาย อนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ
These five things lead to the decline and disappearance of the true teaching.
ปญฺจิเม, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺมา สทฺธมฺมสฺส ฐิติยา อสมฺโมสาย อนนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตนฺติฯ กตเม ปญฺจ?
These five things lead to the continuation, persistence, and enduring of the true teaching. What five?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขู ธมฺมํ ปริยาปุณนฺติ—สุตฺตํ, เคยฺยํ, เวยฺยากรณํ, คาถํ, อุทานํ, อิติวุตฺตกํ, ชาตกํ, อพฺภุตธมฺมํ, เวทลฺลํฯ อยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปฐโม ธมฺโม สทฺธมฺมสฺส ฐิติยา อสมฺโมสาย อนนฺตรธานาย สํวตฺตติฯ
