Diligence
อถ โข อญฺญตโร พฺราหฺมโณ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควตา สทฺธึ สมฺโมทิฯ สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สารณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข โส พฺราหฺมโณ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then a certain brahmin went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“อตฺถิ นุ โข, โภ โคตม, เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต โย อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโก”ติ?
“Master Gotama, is there one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come?”
“อตฺถิ โข, พฺราหฺมณ, เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต โย อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโก”ติฯ
“There is, brahmin.”
“กตโม ปน, โภ โคตม, เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต โย อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโก”ติ?
“So what is it?”
“อปฺปมาโท โข, พฺราหฺมณ, เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโกฯ
“Diligence, brahmin, is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
เสยฺยถาปิ, พฺราหฺมณ, ยานิ กานิจิ ชงฺคลานํ ปาณานํ ปทชาตานิ, สพฺพานิ ตานิ หตฺถิปเท สโมธานํ คจฺฉนฺติ; หตฺถิปทํ เตสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ, ยทิทํ มหนฺตตฺเตนฯ เอวเมวํ โข, พฺราหฺมณ, อปฺปมาโท เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโกฯ
The footprints of all creatures that walk can fit inside an elephant’s footprint. So an elephant’s footprint is said to be the biggest of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
เสยฺยถาปิ, พฺราหฺมณ, กูฏาคารสฺส ยา กาจิ โคปานสิโย สพฺพา ตา กูฏงฺคมา กูฏนินฺนา กูฏสโมสรณา, กูฏํ ตาสํ อคฺคมกฺขายติ; เอวเมวํ โข, พฺราหฺมณ …เป…ฯ

The radiance of all the stars is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s radiance, so the moon’s radiance is said to be the best of them all. In the same way, diligence is one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.
อยํ โข, พฺราหฺมณ, เอโก ธมฺโม ภาวิโต พหุลีกโต อุโภ อตฺเถ สมธิคฺคยฺห ติฏฺฐติ—ทิฏฺฐธมฺมิกญฺเจว อตฺถํ, โย จ อตฺโถ สมฺปรายิโก”ติฯ
This is the one thing that, when developed and cultivated, secures benefits for both the present life and lives to come.”
“อภิกฺกนฺตํ, โภ โคตม, อภิกฺกนฺตํ, โภ โคตม …เป… อุปาสกํ มํ ภวํ โคตโม ธาเรตุ อชฺชตคฺเค ปาณุเปตํ สรณํ คตนฺ”ติฯ
“Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
