11. Living Comfortably
อานนฺทสุตฺต
With Ānanda
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา โกสมฺพิยํ วิหรติ โฆสิตาราเมฯ
At one time the Buddha was staying near Kosambī, in Ghosita’s Monastery.
อถ โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อานนฺโท ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “กิตฺตาวตา นุ โข, ภนฺเต, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติ?
Then Venerable Ānanda went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him, “Sir, how could a bhikkhu live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”
“ยโต โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรํ อธิสีเล สมฺปวตฺตา; เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติฯ
“It’s when a bhikkhu is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical. That’s how a bhikkhu could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”
“สิยา ปน, ภนฺเต, อญฺโญปิ ปริยาโย ยถา ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติ?
“But sir, could there be another way for a bhikkhu to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”
“สิยา, อานนฺทฯ ยโต โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรํ อธิสีเล สมฺปวตฺตา; อตฺตานุเปกฺขี จ โหติ, โน ปรานุเปกฺขี; เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติฯ
“There could, Ānanda. It’s when a bhikkhu is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical. And they watch themselves, but don’t watch others. That’s how a bhikkhu could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”
“สิยา ปน, ภนฺเต, อญฺโญปิ ปริยาโย ยถา ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติ?
“But sir, could there be another way for a bhikkhu to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”
“สิยา, อานนฺทฯ ยโต โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรํ อธิสีเล สมฺปวตฺตา; อตฺตานุเปกฺขี จ โหติ, โน ปรานุเปกฺขี; อปญฺญาโต จ โหติ, เตน จ อปญฺญาตเกน โน ปริตสฺสติ; เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติฯ
“There could, Ānanda. It’s when a bhikkhu is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical. And they watch themselves, but don’t watch others. And they’re not well-known, but aren’t bothered by that. That’s how a bhikkhu could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”
“สิยา ปน, ภนฺเต, อญฺโญปิ ปริยาโย ยถา ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติ?
“But sir, could there be another way for a bhikkhu to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”
“สิยา, อานนฺทฯ ยโต โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรํ อธิสีเล สมฺปวตฺตา; อตฺตานุเปกฺขี จ โหติ, โน ปรานุเปกฺขี; อปญฺญาโต จ โหติ, เตน จ อปญฺญาตเกน โน ปริตสฺสติ; จตุนฺนญฺจ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี; เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติฯ
“There could, Ānanda. It’s when a bhikkhu is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical. And they watch themselves, but don’t watch others. And they’re not well-known, but aren’t bothered by that. And they get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty. That’s how a bhikkhu could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.”
“สิยา ปน, ภนฺเต, อญฺโญปิ ปริยาโย ยถา ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยา”ติ?
“But sir, might there be another way for a bhikkhu to live comfortably while staying in a monastic community?”
“สิยา, อานนฺทฯ ยโต โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ อตฺตนา สีลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, โน ปรํ อธิสีเล สมฺปวตฺตา; อตฺตานุเปกฺขี จ โหติ, โน ปรานุเปกฺขี; อปญฺญาโต จ โหติ, เตน จ อปญฺญาตเกน โน ปริตสฺสติ; จตุนฺนญฺจ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี; อาสวานญฺจ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติ; เอตฺตาวตาปิ โข, อานนฺท, ภิกฺขุ สงฺเฆ วิหรนฺโต ผาสุํ วิหเรยฺยฯ
“There could, Ānanda. It’s when a bhikkhu is accomplished in their own ethical conduct, but they don’t urge others to be ethical. And they watch themselves, but don’t watch others. And they’re not well-known, but aren’t bothered by that. And they get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty. And they realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. That’s how a bhikkhu could live comfortably while staying in a monastic community.
อิมมฺหา จาหํ, อานนฺท, ผาสุวิหารา อญฺโญ ผาสุวิหาโร อุตฺตริตโร วา ปณีตตโร วา นตฺถีติ วทามี”ติฯ
And I say that there is no better or finer way of living comfortably than this.”
