“သတ္တိမာနိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဗလာနိ၊ ကတမာနိ သတ္တ? သဒ္ဓါဗလံ, ဝီရိယဗလံ, ဟိရီဗလံ, ဩတ္တပ္ပဗလံ, သတိဗလံ, သမာဓိဗလံ, ပညာဗလံ၊
“Bhikkhus, there are these seven powers. What seven? The powers of faith, energy, conscience, prudence, mindfulness, samādhi, and wisdom.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သဒ္ဓါဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော သဒ္ဓေါ ဟောတိ, သဒ္ဒဟတိ တထာဂတဿ ဗောဓိံ: ‘ဣတိပိ သော ဘဂဝါ အရဟံ သမ္မာသမ္ဗုဒ္ဓေါ …ပေ… သတ္ထာ ဒေဝမနုဿာနံ ဗုဒ္ဓေါ ဘဂဝါ'တိ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သဒ္ဓါဗလံ၊
And what is the power of faith? It’s when a noble disciple has faith in the Realized One’s awakening: ‘That Blessed One is perfected, a fully awakened Buddha, accomplished in knowledge and conduct, holy, knower of the world, supreme guide for those who wish to train, teacher of gods and humans, awakened, blessed.’ This is called the power of faith.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝီရိယဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော အာရဒ္ဓဝီရိယော ဝိဟရတိ အကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ ပဟာနာယ, ကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဒါယ, ထာမဝါ ဒဠှပရက္ကမော အနိက္ခိတ္တဓုရော ကုသလေသု ဓမ္မေသု၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝီရိယဗလံ၊
And what is the power of energy? It’s when a noble disciple lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They’re strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. This is called the power of energy.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဟိရီဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော ဟိရီမာ ဟောတိ, ဟိရီယတိ ကာယဒုစ္စရိတေန ဝစီဒုစ္စရိတေန မနောဒုစ္စရိတေန, ဟိရီယတိ ပါပကာနံ အကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ သမာပတ္တိယာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဟိရီဗလံ၊
And what is the power of conscience? It’s when a noble disciple has a conscience. They’re conscientious about bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and conscientious about acquiring any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of conscience.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဩတ္တပ္ပဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော ဩတ္တပ္ပီ ဟောတိ, ဩတ္တပ္ပတိ ကာယဒုစ္စရိတေန ဝစီဒုစ္စရိတေန မနောဒုစ္စရိတေန, ဩတ္တပ္ပတိ ပါပကာနံ အကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ သမာပတ္တိယာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဩတ္တပ္ပဗလံ၊
And what is the power of prudence? It’s when a noble disciple is prudent. They’re prudent when it comes to bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind, and prudent when it comes to the acquiring of any bad, unskillful qualities. This is called the power of prudence.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သတိဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော သတိမာ ဟောတိ ပရမေန သတိနေပက္ကေန သမန္နာဂတော စိရကတမ္ပိ စိရဘာသိတမ္ပိ သရိတာ အနုဿရိတာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သတိဗလံ၊
And what is the power of mindfulness? It’s when a noble disciple is mindful. They have utmost mindfulness and alertness, and can remember and recall what was said and done long ago. This is called the power of mindfulness.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမာဓိဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော ဝိဝိစ္စေဝ ကာမေဟိ …ပေ… စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမာဓိဗလံ၊
And what is the power of samādhi? It’s when a noble disciple, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of seclusion, while thougths are being born and sustained analysis is going on. … Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called the power of samādhi.
ကတမဉ္စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပညာဗလံ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော ပညဝါ ဟောတိ ဥဒယတ္ထဂါမိနိယာ ပညာယ သမန္နာဂတော အရိယာယ နိဗ္ဗေဓိကာယ သမ္မာ ဒုက္ခက္ခယဂါမိနိယာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပညာဗလံ၊
And what is the power of wisdom? It’s when a noble disciple is wise. They have the wisdom of arising and passing away which is noble, penetrative, and leads to the complete ending of suffering. This is called the power of wisdom.
ဣမာနိ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သတ္တ ဗလာနီတိ၊
These are the seven powers.
သဒ္ဓါဗလံ ဝီရိယဉ္စ, ဟိရီ ဩတ္တပ္ပိယံ ဗလံ; သတိဗလံ သမာဓိ စ, ပညာ ဝေ သတ္တမံ ဗလံ; ဧတေဟိ ဗလဝါ ဘိက္ခု, သုခံ ဇီဝတိ ပဏ္ဍိတော၊
The powers are faith and energy, conscience and prudence, mindfulness and samādhi, and wisdom as the seventh power. Empowered by these, an astute bhikkhu lives happily.
ယောနိသော ဝိစိနေ ဓမ္မံ, ပညာယတ္ထံ ဝိပဿတိ; ပဇ္ဇောတဿေဝ နိဗ္ဗာနံ, ဝိမောက္ခော ဟောတိ စေတသော”တိ၊
They should examine the teaching rationally, discerning the meaning with wisdom. The liberation of their heart is like a lamp going out.”
