เสยฺยาสุตฺต
Lying Postures
“จตโสฺส อิมา, ภิกฺขเว, เสยฺยาฯ กตมา จตโสฺส? เปตเสยฺยา, กามโภคิเสยฺยา, สีหเสยฺยา, ตถาคตเสยฺยาฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these four ways of lying down. What four? The ways a corpse, a pleasure seeker, a lion, and a Realized One lie down.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, เปตเสยฺยา? เยภุเยฺยน, ภิกฺขเว, เปตา อุตฺตานา เสนฺติ; อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, เปตเสยฺยาฯ
And how does a corpse lie down? Corpses usually lie flat on their backs. This is called the way a corpse lies down.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, กามโภคิเสยฺยา? เยภุเยฺยน, ภิกฺขเว, กามโภคี วาเมน ปเสฺสน เสนฺติ; อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กามโภคิเสยฺยาฯ
And how does a pleasure seeker lie down? Pleasure seekers usually lie down on their left side. This is called the way a pleasure seeker lies down.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, สีหเสยฺยา? สีโห, ภิกฺขเว, มิคราชา ทกฺขิเณน ปเสฺสน เสยฺยํ กปฺเปติ, ปาเท ปาทํ อจฺจาธาย, อนฺตรสตฺถิมฺหิ นงฺคุฏฺฐํ อนุปกฺขิปิตฺวาฯ โส ปฏิพุชฺฌิตฺวา ปุริมํ กายํ อพฺภุนฺนาเมตฺวา ปจฺฉิมํ กายํ อนุวิโลเกติฯ สเจ, ภิกฺขเว, สีโห มิคราชา กิญฺจิ ปสฺสติ กายสฺส วิกฺขิตฺตํ วา วิสฏํ วา, เตน, ภิกฺขเว, สีโห มิคราชา อนตฺตมโน โหติฯ สเจ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, สีโห มิคราชา น กิญฺจิ ปสฺสติ กายสฺส วิกฺขิตฺตํ วา วิสฏํ วา, เตน, ภิกฺขเว, สีโห มิคราชา อตฺตมโน โหติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, สีหเสยฺยาฯ
And how does a lion lie down? The lion, king of beasts, lies down on the right side, placing one foot on top of the other, with his tail tucked between his thighs. When he wakes, he lifts his front quarters and checks his hind quarters. If he sees that any part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is displeased. But if he sees that no part of his body is disordered or displaced, he is pleased. This is called the way a lion lies down.
กตมา จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตถาคตเสยฺยา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ตถาคโต วิวิจฺเจว กาเมหิ …เป… จตุตฺถํ ฌานํ อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ตถาคตเสยฺยาฯ
And how does a Realized One lie down? It’s when a Realized One, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna … second jhāna … third jhāna … fourth jhāna. This is called the way a Realized One lies down.
อิมา โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตโสฺส เสยฺยา”ติฯ
These are the four ways of lying down.”
