“‘โส วต, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น สนฺเตน สมาธินา น ปณีเตน น ปฏิปฺปสฺสทฺธิลทฺเธน น เอโกทิภาวาธิคเตน อเนกวิหิตํ อิทฺธิวิธํ ปจฺจนุภวิสฺสติ—เอโกปิ หุตฺวา พหุธา ภวิสฺสติ, พหุธาปิ หุตฺวา เอโก ภวิสฺสติ …เป… ยาว พฺรหฺมโลกาปิ กาเยน วสํ วตฺเตสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
“Bhikkhus, it’s quite impossible that a bhikkhu without samādhi that is peaceful, refined, tranquil, and unified will wield the many kinds of psychic power: multiplying themselves and becoming one again; appearing and disappearing; going unimpeded through a wall, a rampart, or a mountain as if through space; diving in and out of the earth as if it were water; walking on water as if it were earth; flying cross-legged through the sky like a bird; touching and stroking with the hand the sun and moon, so mighty and powerful. They control the body as far as the Brahmā realm.
‘ทิพฺพาย โสตธาตุยา วิสุทฺธาย อติกฺกนฺตมานุสิกาย อุโภ สทฺเท สุณิสฺสติ—ทิพฺเพ จ มานุเส จ เย ทูเร สนฺติเก จา'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
It’s impossible that with clairaudience that is purified and superhuman, they’ll hear both kinds of sounds, human and divine, whether near or far.
‘ปรสตฺตานํ ปรปุคฺคลานํ เจตสา เจโต ปริจฺจ ปชานิสฺสติ—สราคํ วา จิตฺตํ สราคํ จิตฺตนฺติ ปชานิสฺสติ …เป… วิมุตฺตํ วา จิตฺตํ วิมุตฺตํ จิตฺตนฺติ ปชานิสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
It’s impossible that they’ll understand the minds of other beings and individuals, having comprehended them with their own mind, understanding mind with greed as ‘mind with greed’ … and freed mind as ‘freed mind’.
‘อเนกวิหิตํ ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ อนุสฺสริสฺสติ, เสยฺยถิทํ—เอกมฺปิ ชาตึ, เทฺวปิ ชาติโย …เป… อิติ สาการํ เสาทฺเทสํ อเนกวิหิตํ ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ อนุสฺสริสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
It’s impossible that they’ll recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
‘ทิพฺเพน จกฺขุนา วิสุทฺเธน อติกฺกนฺตมานุสเกน สตฺเต ปสฺสิสฺสติ …เป… ยถากมฺมูปเค สตฺเต ปชานิสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
It’s impossible that with clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, they’ll understand how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.
‘อาสวานํ ขยา …เป… สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหริสฺสตี'ติ เนตํ ฐานํ วิชฺชติฯ
It’s impossible that they’ll realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life, and live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
‘โส วต, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สนฺเตน สมาธินา ปณีเตน ปฏิปฺปสฺสทฺธิลทฺเธน เอโกทิภาวาธิคเตน อเนกวิหิตํ อิทฺธิวิธํ ปจฺจนุภวิสฺสติ …เป… ยาว พฺรหฺมโลกาปิ กาเยน วสํ วตฺเตสฺสตี'ติ ฐานเมตํ วิชฺชติฯ
