ปฐมโสเจยฺยสุตฺต
Purity (1st)
“ตีณิมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, โสเจยฺยานิฯ กตมานิ ตีณิ? กายโสเจยฺยํ, วจีโสเจยฺยํ, มโนโสเจยฺยํฯ
“Bhikkhus, there are these three kinds of purity. What three? Purity of body, speech, and mind.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, กายโสเจยฺยํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโต โหติฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กายโสเจยฺยํฯ
And what is purity of body? It’s when someone doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, or commit sexual misconduct. This is called ‘purity of body’.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, วจีโสเจยฺยํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ปิสุณาย วาจาย ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, ผรุสาย วาจาย ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, สมฺผปฺปลาปา ปฏิวิรโต โหติฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, วจีโสเจยฺยํฯ
And what is purity of speech? It’s when someone doesn’t use speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. This is called ‘purity of speech’.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, มโนโสเจยฺยํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ อนภิชฺฌาลุ โหติ อพฺยาปนฺนจิตฺโต สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิโกฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, มโนโสเจยฺยํฯ
And what is purity of mind? It’s when someone is content, kind-hearted, and has right view. This is called ‘purity of mind’.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตีณิ โสเจยฺยานี”ติฯ
These are the three kinds of purity.”
