อปฺปเมยฺยสุตฺต
Immeasurable
“ตโยเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? สุปฺปเมโยฺย, ทุปฺปเมโยฺย, อปฺปเมโยฺยฯ
“Bhikkhus, these three people are found in the world. What three? Someone easy to measure, someone hard to measure, and someone who is immeasurable.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สุปฺปเมโยฺย? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อุทฺธโต โหติ อุนฺนโฬ จปโล มุขโร วิกิณฺณวาโจ มุฏฺฐสฺสติ อสมฺปชาโน อสมาหิโต วิพฺภนฺตจิตฺโต ปากตินฺทฺริโยฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล สุปฺปเมโยฺยฯ
And who is the person easy to measure? It’s a person who is restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, loose-tongued, unmindful, lacking focused awareness and samādhi, with straying mind and undisciplined faculties. This is called ‘a person easy to measure’.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ทุปฺปเมโยฺย? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อนุทฺธโต โหติ อนุนฺนโฬ อจปโล อมุขโร อวิกิณฺณวาโจ อุปฏฺฐิตสฺสติ สมฺปชาโน สมาหิโต เอกคฺคจิตฺโต สํวุตินฺทฺริโยฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล ทุปฺปเมโยฺยฯ
And who is the person hard to measure? It’s a person who is not restless, insolent, fickle, scurrilous, or loose-tongued. They have established mindfulness, focused awareness and samādhi, with unified mind and restrained faculties. This is called ‘a person hard to measure’.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อปฺปเมโยฺย? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อรหํ โหติ ขีณาสโวฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล อปฺปเมโยฺยฯ
And who is the immeasurable person? It’s a bhikkhu who is perfected, and has ended defilements. This is called ‘an immeasurable person’.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the three people found in the world.”
