Speech like Dung
“ตโยเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? คูถภาณี, ปุปฺผภาณี, มธุภาณีฯ
“These three kinds of people are found in the world. What three? One with speech like dung, one with speech like flowers, and one with speech like honey.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คูถภาณี? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล สภคฺคโต วา ปริสคฺคโต วา ญาติมชฺฌคโต วา ปูคมชฺฌคโต วา ราชกุลมชฺฌคโต วา อภินีโต สกฺขิปุฏฺโฐ: ‘เอหมฺโภ ปุริส, ยํ ชานาสิ ตํ วเทหี'ติฯ โส อชานํ วา อาห: ‘ชานามี'ติ, ชานํ วา อาห: ‘น ชานามี'ติ, อปสฺสํ วา อาห: ‘ปสฺสามี'ติ, ปสฺสํ วา อาห: ‘น ปสฺสามี'ติ; อิติ อตฺตเหตุ วา ปรเหตุ วา อามิสกิญฺจิกฺขเหตุ วา สมฺปชานมุสา ภาสิตา โหติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล คูถภาณีฯ
And who has speech like dung? It’s someone who is summoned to a council, an assembly, a family meeting, a guild, or to the royal court, and asked to bear witness: ‘Please, mister, say what you know.’ Not knowing, they say ‘I know.’ Knowing, they say ‘I don’t know.’ Not seeing, they say ‘I see.’ And seeing, they say ‘I don’t see.’ So they deliberately lie for the sake of themselves or another, or for some trivial worldly reason. This is called a person with speech like dung.

And who has speech like flowers? กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล มธุภาณี? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ผรุสํ วาจํ ปหาย ผรุสาย วาจาย ปฏิวิรโต โหติ; ยา สา วาจา เนลา กณฺณสุขา เปมนียา หทยงฺคมา โปรี พหุชนกนฺตา พหุชนมนาปา ตถารูปึ วาจํ ภาสิตา โหติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคโล มธุภาณีฯ
And who has speech like honey? It’s someone who gives up harsh speech. They speak in a way that’s mellow, pleasing to the ear, lovely, going to the heart, polite, likable and agreeable to the people. This is called a person with speech like honey.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the three people found in the world.”
