The Realm of the Gods
“สเจ โว, ภิกฺขเว, อญฺญติตฺถิยา ปริพฺพาชกา เอวํ ปุจฺเฉยฺยุํ: ‘เทวโลกูปปตฺติยา, อาวุโส, สมเณ โคตเม พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสถา'ติ? นนุ ตุเมฺห, ภิกฺขเว, เอวํ ปุฏฺฐา อฏฺฏีเยยฺยาถ หราเยยฺยาถ ชิคุจฺเฉยฺยาถา”ติ?
“Bhikkhus, if wanderers who follow another religion were to ask you: ‘Friend, do you lead the spiritual life with the ascetic Gotama so that you can be reborn in the realm of the gods?’ Being questioned like this, wouldn’t you be horrified, repelled, and disgusted?”
“เอวํ, ภนฺเต”ฯ
“Yes, sir.”
“อิติ กิร ตุเมฺห, ภิกฺขเว, ทิพฺเพน อายุนา อฏฺฏียถ หรายถ ชิคุจฺฉถ, ทิพฺเพน วณฺเณน ทิพฺเพน สุเขน ทิพฺเพน ยเสน ทิพฺเพนาธิปเตเยฺยน อฏฺฏียถ หรายถ ชิคุจฺฉถ; ปเคว โข ปน, ภิกฺขเว, ตุเมฺหหิ กายทุจฺจริเตน อฏฺฏียิตพฺพํ หรายิตพฺพํ ชิคุจฺฉิตพฺพํ, วจีทุจฺจริเตน … มโนทุจฺจริเตน อฏฺฏียิตพฺพํ หรายิตพฺพํ ชิคุจฺฉิตพฺพนฺ”ติฯ
“So it seems that you are horrified, repelled, and disgusted by divine lifespan, beauty, happiness, fame, and sovereignty. How much more then should you be horrified, embarrassed, and disgusted by bad conduct by way of body, speech, and mind.”
