“ตโยเม, ภิกฺขเว, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? อรุกูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโล, วิชฺชูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโล, วชิรูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโลฯ
“These three people are found in the world. What three? A person with a mind like an open sore, a person with a mind like lightning, and a person with a mind like diamond.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, อรุกูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโล? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล โกธโน โหติ อุปายาสพหุโล อปฺปมฺปิ วุตฺโต สมาโน อภิสชฺชติ กุปฺปติ พฺยาปชฺชติ ปติตฺถียติ โกปญฺจ โทสญฺจ อปฺปจฺจยญฺจ ปาตุกโรติฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, ทุฏฺฐารุโก กฏฺเฐน วา กฐลาย วา ฆฏฺฏิโต ภิโยฺยโส มตฺตาย อาสวํ เทติ; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล โกธโน โหติ อุปายาสพหุโล อปฺปมฺปิ วุตฺโต สมาโน อภิสชฺชติ กุปฺปติ พฺยาปชฺชติ ปติตฺถียติ โกปญฺจ โทสญฺจ อปฺปจฺจยญฺจ ปาตุกโรติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, อรุกูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโลฯ
And who has a mind like an open sore? It’s someone who is irritable and bad-tempered. Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness. They’re like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more. In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered. กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, วิชฺชูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโล? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขสมุทโย'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรโธ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, จกฺขุมา ปุริโส รตฺตนฺธการติมิสายํ วิชฺชนฺตริกาย รูปานิ ปเสฺสยฺย; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, วิชฺชูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโลฯ
And who has a mind like lightning? It’s someone who truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. They’re like a person with keen eyes in the dark of the night, who sees by a flash of lightning. In the same way, someone truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. This is called a person with a mind like lightning.
กตโม จ, ภิกฺขเว, วชิรูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโล? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ เสยฺยถาปิ, ภิกฺขเว, วชิรสฺส นตฺถิ กิญฺจิ อเภชฺชํ มณิ วา ปาสาโณ วา; เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อิเธกจฺโจ ปุคฺคโล อาสวานํ ขยา …เป… อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อยํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, วชิรูปมจิตฺโต ปุคฺคโลฯ
And who has a mind like diamond? It’s someone who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. It’s like a diamond, which can’t be cut by anything at all, not even a gem or a stone. In the same way, someone realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. … This is called a person with a mind like diamond.
อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมินฺ”ติฯ
These are the three people found in the world.”
