With Saviṭṭha
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery.
อถ โข อายสฺมา จ สมิทฺโธ อายสฺมา จ มหาโกฏฺฐิโก เยนายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา อายสฺมตา สาริปุตฺเตน สทฺธึ สมฺโมทึสุฯ
Then Venerable Saviṭṭha and Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him.
สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สารณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข อายสฺมนฺตํ สมิทฺธํ อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เอตทโวจ: “ตโยเม, อาวุโส สมิทฺธ, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ กตโม เต ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จา”ติ?
When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side and Venerable Sāriputta said to Venerable Saviṭṭha, “Friend Saviṭṭha, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, who do you believe to be the finest?”
“ตโยเม, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล สทฺธาวิมุตฺโต, อยํ เม ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อิเมสํ ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? อิมสฺส, อาวุโส, ปุคฺคลสฺส สทฺธินฺทฺริยํ อธิมตฺตนฺ”ติฯ
“Friend Sāriputta, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, I believe the person freed by faith to be finest. Why is that? Because this person’s faculty of faith is outstanding.”
อถ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต อายสฺมนฺตํ มหาโกฏฺฐิกํ เอตทโวจ: “ตโยเม, อาวุโส โกฏฺฐิก, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ กตโม เต ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จา”ติ?
Then Sāriputta said to Mahākoṭṭhita, “Friend Koṭṭhika, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, who do you believe to be the finest?”
“ตโยเม, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล กายสกฺขี, อยํ เม ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อิเมสํ ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? อิมสฺส, อาวุโส, ปุคฺคลสฺส สมาธินฺทฺริยํ อธิมตฺตนฺ”ติฯ
“Friend Sāriputta, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, I believe the personal witness to be finest. Why is that? Because this person’s faculty of samādhi is outstanding.”
อถ โข อายสฺมา มหาโกฏฺฐิโก อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ เอตทโวจ: “ตโยเม, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ กตโม เต ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จา”ติ?
Then Mahākoṭṭhita said to Sāriputta, “Friend Sāriputta, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, who do you believe to be the finest?”
“ตโยเม, อาวุโส โกฏฺฐิก, ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ กตเม ตโย? กายสกฺขี, ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, สทฺธาวิมุตฺโตฯ อิเม โข, อาวุโส, ตโย ปุคฺคลา สนฺโต สํวิชฺชมานา โลกสฺมึฯ อิเมสํ, อาวุโส, ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต, อยํ เม ปุคฺคโล ขมติ อิเมสํ ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? อิมสฺส, อาวุโส, ปุคฺคลสฺส ปญฺญินฺทฺริยํ อธิมตฺตนฺ”ติฯ
“Friend Koṭṭhika, these three people are found in the world. What three? The personal witness, the one attained to view, and the one freed by faith. These are the three people found in the world. Of these three people, I believe the person attained to view to be finest. Why is that? Because this person’s faculty of wisdom is outstanding.”
อถ โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต อายสฺมนฺตญฺจ สมิทฺธํ อายสฺมนฺตญฺจ มหาโกฏฺฐิกํ เอตทโวจ: “พฺยากตํ โข, อาวุโส, อเมฺหหิ สพฺเพเหว ยถาสกํ ปฏิภานํฯ อายามาวุโส, เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิสฺสาม; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควโต เอตมตฺถํ อาโรเจสฺสามฯ ยถา โน ภควา พฺยากริสฺสติ ตถา นํ ธาเรสฺสามา”ติฯ
Then Sāriputta said to Saviṭṭha and Mahākoṭṭhita, “Each of us has spoken from the heart. Come, friends, let’s go to the Buddha, and tell him about this. As he answers, so we’ll remember it.”
“เอวมาวุโส”ติ โข อายสฺมา จ สมิทฺโธ อายสฺมา จ มหาโกฏฺฐิโก อายสฺมโต สาริปุตฺตสฺส ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ อถ โข อายสฺมา จ สาริปุตฺโต อายสฺมา จ สมิทฺโธ อายสฺมา จ มหาโกฏฺฐิโก เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมึสุ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทึสุฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต ยาวตโก อโหสิ อายสฺมตา จ สมิทฺเธน อายสฺมตา จ มหาโกฏฺฐิเกน สทฺธึ กถาสลฺลาโป ตํ สพฺพํ ภควโต อาโรเจสิฯ
“Yes, friend,” they replied. Then Sāriputta, Saviṭṭha, and Mahākoṭṭhita went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. Then Sāriputta told the Buddha of all they had discussed.
“น เขฺวตฺถ, สาริปุตฺต, สุกรํ เอกํเสน พฺยากาตุํ: ‘อยํ อิเมสํ ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จา'ติฯ ฐานเญฺหตํ, สาริปุตฺต, วิชฺชติ ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล สทฺธาวิมุตฺโต สฺวาสฺส อรหตฺตาย ปฏิปนฺโน, ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล กายสกฺขี สฺวาสฺส สกทาคามี วา อนาคามี วา, โย จายํ ปุคฺคโล ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต โสปสฺส สกทาคามี วา อนาคามี วาฯ
“In this matter, Sāriputta, it’s not easy to definitively declare that one of these three people is finest. In some cases, a person who is freed by faith is practicing for perfection, while the personal witness and the one attained to view are once-returners or non-returners.
น เขฺวตฺถ, สาริปุตฺต, สุกรํ เอกํเสน พฺยากาตุํ: ‘อยํ อิเมสํ ติณฺณํ ปุคฺคลานํ อภิกฺกนฺตตโร จ ปณีตตโร จา'ติฯ ฐานเญฺหตํ, สาริปุตฺต, วิชฺชติ ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล กายสกฺขี สฺวาสฺส อรหตฺตาย ปฏิปนฺโน, ยฺวายํ ปุคฺคโล สทฺธาวิมุตฺโต สฺวาสฺส สกทาคามี วา อนาคามี วา, โย จายํ ปุคฺคโล ทิฏฺฐิปฺปตฺโต โสปสฺส สกทาคามี วา อนาคามี วาฯ
In this matter, it’s not easy to definitively declare that one of these three people is finest. In some cases, a personal witness is practicing for perfection, while the one freed by faith and the one attained to view are once-returners or non-returners.
