The Astute and the Foolish

သာဝတ္ထိယံ ဝိဟရတိ၊

At Sāvatthī.

“အဝိဇ္ဇာနီဝရဏဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဗာလဿ တဏှာယ သမ္ပယုတ္တဿ ဧဝမယံ ကာယော သမုဒါဂတော၊ ဣတိ အယဉ္စေဝ ကာယော ဗဟိဒ္ဓါ စ နာမရူပံ, ဣတ္ထေတံ ဒွယံ, ဒွယံ ပဋိစ္စ ဖဿော သဠေဝါယတနာနိ, ယေဟိ ဖုဋ္ဌော ဗာလော သုခဒုက္ခံ ပဋိသံဝေဒယတိ ဧတေသံ ဝါ အညတရေန၊

“Bhikkhus, for a fool shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving, this body has been produced. So there is the duality of this body and external name and form. Contact depends on this duality. When contacted through one or other of the six sense fields, the fool experiences pleasure and pain.

အဝိဇ္ဇာနီဝရဏဿ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပဏ္ဍိတဿ တဏှာယ သမ္ပယုတ္တဿ ဧဝမယံ ကာယော သမုဒါဂတော၊ ဣတိ အယဉ္စေဝ ကာယော ဗဟိဒ္ဓါ စ နာမရူပံ, ဣတ္ထေတံ ဒွယံ, ဒွယံ ပဋိစ္စ ဖဿော သဠေဝါယတနာနိ, ယေဟိ ဖုဋ္ဌော ပဏ္ဍိတော သုခဒုက္ခံ ပဋိသံဝေဒယတိ ဧတေသံ ဝါ အညတရေန၊

For an astute person shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving, this body has been produced. So there is the duality of this body and external name and form. Contact depends on this duality. When contacted through one or other of the six sense fields, the astute person experiences pleasure and pain.

တတြ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ကော ဝိသေသော ကော အဓိပ္ပယာသော ကိံ နာနာကရဏံ ပဏ္ဍိတဿ ဗာလေနာ”တိ?

What, then, is the difference between the foolish and the astute?”

“ဘဂဝံမူလကာ နော, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မာ, ဘဂဝံနေတ္တိကာ, ဘဂဝံပဋိသရဏာ၊ သာဓု ဝတ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝန္တံယေဝ ပဋိဘာတု ဧတဿ ဘာသိတဿ အတ္ထော၊ ဘဂဝတော သုတွာ ဘိက္ခူ ဓာရေဿန္တီ”တိ၊

“Our teachings are rooted in the Buddha. He is our guide and our refuge. Sir, may the Buddha himself please clarify the meaning of this. The bhikkhus will listen and remember it.”

“တေန ဟိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သုဏာထ, သာဓုကံ မနသိ ကရောထ, ဘာသိဿာမီ”တိ၊

“Well then, bhikkhus, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ တေ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော ပစ္စဿောသုံ၊ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

“ယာယ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဝိဇ္ဇာယ နိဝုတဿ ဗာလဿ ယာယ စ တဏှာယ သမ္ပယုတ္တဿ အယံ ကာယော သမုဒါဂတော, သာ စေဝ အဝိဇ္ဇာ ဗာလဿ အပ္ပဟီနာ သာ စ တဏှာ အပရိက္ခီဏာ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? န, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဗာလော အစရိ ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ သမ္မာ ဒုက္ခက္ခယာယ၊ တသ္မာ ဗာလော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ ကာယူပဂေါ ဟောတိ, သော ကာယူပဂေါ သမာနော န ပရိမုစ္စတိ ဇာတိယာ ဇရာမရဏေန သောကေဟိ ပရိဒေဝေဟိ ဒုက္ခေဟိ ဒေါမနဿေဟိ ဥပါယာသေဟိ၊ န ပရိမုစ္စတိ ဒုက္ခသ္မာတိ ဝဒါမိ၊

“For a fool shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving, this body has been produced. But the fool has not given up that ignorance or finished that craving. Why is that? The fool has not completed the spiritual journey for the complete ending of suffering. Therefore, when their body breaks up, the fool is reborn in another body. When reborn in another body, they’re not freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re not freed from suffering, I say.

ယာယ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဝိဇ္ဇာယ နိဝုတဿ ပဏ္ဍိတဿ ယာယ စ တဏှာယ သမ္ပယုတ္တဿ အယံ ကာယော သမုဒါဂတော, သာ စေဝ အဝိဇ္ဇာ ပဏ္ဍိတဿ ပဟီနာ, သာ စ တဏှာ ပရိက္ခီဏာ၊ တံ ကိဿ ဟေတု? အစရိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပဏ္ဍိတော ဗြဟ္မစရိယံ သမ္မာ ဒုက္ခက္ခယာယ၊ တသ္မာ ပဏ္ဍိတော ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ န ကာယူပဂေါ ဟောတိ၊ သော အကာယူပဂေါ သမာနော ပရိမုစ္စတိ ဇာတိယာ ဇရာမရဏေန သောကေဟိ ပရိဒေဝေဟိ ဒုက္ခေဟိ ဒေါမနဿေဟိ ဥပါယာသေဟိ၊ ပရိမုစ္စတိ ဒုက္ခသ္မာတိ ဝဒါမိ၊ အယံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဝိသေသော, အယံ အဓိပ္ပယာသော, ဣဒံ နာနာကရဏံ ပဏ္ဍိတဿ ဗာလေန ယဒိဒံ ဗြဟ္မစရိယဝါသော”တိ၊

For an astute person shrouded by ignorance and fettered by craving, this body has been produced. But the astute person has given up that ignorance and finished that craving. Why is that? The astute person has completed the spiritual journey for the complete ending of suffering. Therefore, when their body breaks up, the astute person is not reborn in another body. Not being reborn in another body, they’re freed from rebirth, old age, and death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, sadness, and distress. They’re freed from suffering, I say. This is the difference here between the foolish and the astute, that is, leading the spiritual life.”
