Knowledge

သာဝတ္ထိနိဒါနံ၊

At Sāvatthī.

ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ သော ဘိက္ခု ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

Seated to one side, that bhikkhu said to the Buddha:

“‘ဝိဇ္ဇာ, ဝိဇ္ဇာ'တိ, ဘန္တေ, ဝုစ္စတိ၊ ကတမာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဝိဇ္ဇာ; ကိတ္တာဝတာ စ ဝိဇ္ဇာဂတော ဟောတီ”တိ?

“Sir, they speak of this thing called ‘knowledge’. What is knowledge? And how is a knowledgeable person defined?”

“ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခု, သုတဝါ အရိယသာဝကော ရူပံ ပဇာနာတိ, ရူပသမုဒယံ … ရူပနိရောဓံ … ရူပနိရောဓဂါမိနိံ ပဋိပဒံ ပဇာနာတိ၊ ဝေဒနံ … သညံ … သင်္ခါရေ ပဇာနာတိ …ပေ… ဝိညာဏနိရောဓဂါမိနိံ ပဋိပဒံ ပဇာနာတိ၊

“Bhikkhu, it’s when a learned noble disciple understands form, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation. They understand feeling … perception … functioning patterns … consciousness, its origin, its cessation, and the practice that leads to its cessation.

အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဝိဇ္ဇာ; ဧတ္တာဝတာ စ ဝိဇ္ဇာဂတော ဟောတီ”တိ၊

This is called knowledge. And this is how a knowledgeable person is defined.”
