1. Ignorance

ဝိဘင်္ဂသုတ္တ

Analysis

သာဝတ္ထိနိဒါနံ၊

At Sāvatthī.

“အရိယံ ဝေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကံ မဂ္ဂံ ဒေသေဿာမိ ဝိဘဇိဿာမိ၊ တံ သုဏာထ, သာဓုကံ မနသိ ကရောထ, ဘာသိဿာမီ”တိ၊

“Bhikkhus, I will teach and analyze for you the noble eightfold path. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ တေ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော ပစ္စဿောသုံ၊ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:

“ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယော အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကော မဂ္ဂေါ? သေယျထိဒံ—သမ္မာဒိဋ္ဌိ …ပေ… သမ္မာသမာဓိ၊

“And what is the noble eightfold path? It is right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဒိဋ္ဌိ? ယံ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဒုက္ခေ ဉာဏံ, ဒုက္ခသမုဒယေ ဉာဏံ, ဒုက္ခနိရောဓေ ဉာဏံ, ဒုက္ခနိရောဓဂါမိနိယာ ပဋိပဒါယ ဉာဏံ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဒိဋ္ဌိ၊

And what is right view? Knowing about suffering, the origin of suffering, the cessation of suffering, and the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering. This is called right view.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသင်္ကပ္ပေါ? ယော ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, နေက္ခမ္မသင်္ကပ္ပေါ, အဗျာပါဒသင်္ကပ္ပေါ, အဝိဟိံသာသင်္ကပ္ပေါ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသင်္ကပ္ပေါ၊

And what is right thought? It is the thought of renunciation, good will, and harmlessness. This is called right thought.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဝါစာ? ယာ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, မုသာဝါဒါ ဝေရမဏီ, ပိသုဏာယ ဝါစာယ ဝေရမဏီ, ဖရုသာယ ဝါစာယ ဝေရမဏီ, သမ္ဖပ္ပလာပါ ဝေရမဏီ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဝါစာ၊

And what is right speech? Avoiding speech that’s false, divisive, harsh, or nonsensical. This is called right speech.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာကမ္မန္တော? ယာ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ပါဏာတိပါတာ ဝေရမဏီ, အဒိန္နာဒါနာ ဝေရမဏီ, အဗြဟ္မစရိယာ ဝေရမဏီ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာကမ္မန္တော၊

And what is right action? Avoiding killing living creatures, stealing, and sexual activity. This is called right action.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာအာဇီဝေါ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အရိယသာဝကော မိစ္ဆာအာဇီဝံ ပဟာယ သမ္မာအာဇီဝေန ဇီဝိတံ ကပ္ပေတိ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာအာဇီဝေါ၊

And what is right livelihood? It’s when a noble disciple gives up wrong livelihood and earns a living by right livelihood. This is called right livelihood.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဝါယာမော? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု အနုပ္ပန္နာနံ ပါပကာနံ အကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ အနုပ္ပါဒါယ ဆန္ဒံ ဇနေတိ ဝါယမတိ ဝီရိယံ အာရဘတိ စိတ္တံ ပဂ္ဂဏှာတိ ပဒဟတိ, ဥပ္ပန္နာနံ ပါပကာနံ အကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ ပဟာနာယ ဆန္ဒံ ဇနေတိ …ပေ… အနုပ္ပန္နာနံ ကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ ဥပ္ပါဒါယ ဆန္ဒံ ဇနေတိ …ပေ… ဥပ္ပန္နာနံ ကုသလာနံ ဓမ္မာနံ ဌိတိယာ အသမ္မောသာယ ဘိယျောဘာဝါယ ဝေပုလ္လာယ ဘာဝနာယ ပါရိပူရိယာ ဆန္ဒံ ဇနေတိ ဝါယမတိ ဝီရိယံ အာရဘတိ စိတ္တံ ပဂ္ဂဏှာတိ ပဒဟတိ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာဝါယာမော၊

And what is right effort? It’s when a bhikkhu generates enthusiasm, tries, makes an effort, exerts the mind, and strives so that bad, unskillful qualities don’t arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that bad, unskillful qualities that have arisen are given up. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have not arisen do arise. They generate enthusiasm, try, make an effort, exert the mind, and strive so that skillful qualities that have arisen remain, are not lost, but increase, mature, and are fulfilled by development. This is called right effort.

ကတမာ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသတိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ကာယေ ကာယာနုပဿီ ဝိဟရတိ အာတာပီ သမ္ပဇာနော သတိမာ, ဝိနေယျ လောကေ အဘိဇ္ဈာဒေါမနဿံ; ဝေဒနာသု ဝေဒနာနုပဿီ ဝိဟရတိ အာတာပီ သမ္ပဇာနော သတိမာ, ဝိနေယျ လောကေ အဘိဇ္ဈာဒေါမနဿံ; စိတ္တေ စိတ္တာနုပဿီ ဝိဟရတိ အာတာပီ သမ္ပဇာနော သတိမာ, ဝိနေယျ လောကေ အဘိဇ္ဈာဒေါမနဿံ; ဓမ္မေသု ဓမ္မာနုပဿီ ဝိဟရတိ အာတာပီ သမ္ပဇာနော သတိမာ, ဝိနေယျ လောကေ အဘိဇ္ဈာဒေါမနဿံ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသတိ၊

And what is right mindfulness? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by watching, again and again, an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of feelings—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of the mind—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. This is called right mindfulness.

ကတမော စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသမာဓိ? ဣဓ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဘိက္ခု ဝိဝိစ္စေဝ ကာမေဟိ ဝိဝိစ္စ အကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ သဝိတက္ကံ သဝိစာရံ ဝိဝေကဇံ ပီတိသုခံ ပဌမံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ ဝိတက္ကဝိစာရာနံ ဝူပသမာ အဇ္ဈတ္တံ သမ္ပသာဒနံ စေတသော ဧကောဒိဘာဝံ အဝိတက္ကံ အဝိစာရံ သမာဓိဇံ ပီတိသုခံ ဒုတိယံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ ပီတိယာ စ ဝိရာဂါ ဥပေက္ခကော စ ဝိဟရတိ သတော စ သမ္ပဇာနော, သုခဉ္စ ကာယေန ပဋိသံဝေဒေတိ, ယံ တံ အရိယာ အာစိက္ခန္တိ: ‘ဥပေက္ခကော သတိမာ သုခဝိဟာရီ'တိ တတိယံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ၊ သုခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ဒုက္ခဿ စ ပဟာနာ ပုဗ္ဗေဝ သောမနဿဒေါမနဿာနံ အတ္ထင်္ဂမာ အဒုက္ခမသုခံ ဥပေက္ခာသတိပါရိသုဒ္ဓိံ စတုတ္ထံ ဈာနံ ဥပသမ္ပဇ္ဇ ဝိဟရတိ—အယံ ဝုစ္စတိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သမ္မာသမာဓီ”တိ၊

And what is right samādhi? It’s when a bhikkhu, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unskillful qualities, enters and remains in the first jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of seclusion, while thougths are being born and sustained analysis is going on. As the thougths being born and the sustained analysis going on are stilled, they enter and remain in the second jhāna, which has the (mental) joy and (bodily) pleasure born of samādhi, with internal clarity and mind at one, without thougths being born and without sustained analysis going on. And with the fading away of (mental) joy, they enter and remain in the third jhāna, where they meditate with equanimity, mindful and aware, personally feeling deeply the (bodily) pleasure of which the noble ones declare, ‘Equanimous and mindful, a pleasure is to meditate.’ Giving up pleasure and pain, and ending former happiness and sadness, they enter and remain in the fourth jhāna, without pleasure or pain, with pure equanimity and mindfulness. This is called right samādhi.”
