5. Uposatha
วาเสฏฺฐสุตฺต
With Vāseṭṭha on the Uposatha day
เอกํ สมยํ ภควา เวสาลิยํ วิหรติ มหาวเน กูฏาคารสาลายํฯ อถ โข วาเสฏฺโฐ อุปาสโก เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺนํ โข วาเสฏฺฐํ อุปาสกํ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof. Then the layman Vāseṭṭha went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคโต, วาเสฏฺฐ, อุโปสโถ อุปวุตฺโถ มหปฺผโล โหติ …เป… อนินฺทิตา สคฺคมุเปนฺติ ฐานนฺ”ติฯ
“Vāseṭṭha, the observance of the Uposatha day with its eight factors is very fruitful and beneficial and splendid and bountiful … blameless, they go to a heavenly place.”
เอวํ วุตฺเต, วาเสฏฺโฐ อุปาสโก ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
When he said this, Vāseṭṭha said to the Buddha:
“ปิยา เม, ภนฺเต, ญาติสาโลหิตา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, ปิยานมฺปิ เม อสฺส ญาติสาโลหิตานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายฯ สพฺเพ เจปิ, ภนฺเต, ขตฺติยา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, สพฺเพสมฺปิสฺส ขตฺติยานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายฯ สพฺเพ เจปิ, ภนฺเต, พฺราหฺมณา …เป… เวสฺสา … สุทฺทา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, สพฺเพสมฺปิสฺส สุทฺทานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายา”ติฯ
“If my loved ones—relatives and kin—were to observe this Uposatha day with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness. If all the khattiya class persons, brahmins, peasants, and menials were to observe this Uposatha day with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness.”
“เอวเมตํ, วาเสฏฺฐ, เอวเมตํ, วาเสฏฺฐฯ สพฺเพ เจปิ, วาเสฏฺฐ, ขตฺติยา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, สพฺเพสมฺปิสฺส ขตฺติยานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายฯ สพฺเพ เจปิ, วาเสฏฺฐ, พฺราหฺมณา …เป… เวสฺสา … สุทฺทา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, สพฺเพสมฺปิสฺส สุทฺทานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายฯ สเทวโก เจปิ, วาเสฏฺฐ, โลโก สมารโก สพฺรหฺมโก สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณี ปชา สเทวมนุสฺสา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, สเทวกสฺสปิสฺส โลกสฺส สมารกสฺส สพฺรหฺมกสฺส สสฺสมณพฺราหฺมณิยา ปชาย สเทวมนุสฺสาย ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขายฯ อิเม เจปิ, วาเสฏฺฐ, มหาสาลา อฏฺฐงฺคสมนฺนาคตํ อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺยุํ, อิเมสมฺปิสฺส มหาสาลานํ ทีฆรตฺตํ หิตาย สุขาย (…)ฯ โก ปน วาโท มนุสฺสภูตสฺสา”ติฯ
“That’s so true, Vāseṭṭha! That’s so true, Vāseṭṭha! If all the khattiya class persons, brahmins, peasants, and menials were to observe this Uposatha day with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness. If the whole world—with its gods, Māras and Brahmās, this population with its ascetics and brahmins, gods and humans—were to observe this Uposatha day with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness. If these great sal trees were to observe this Uposatha day with its eight factors, it would be for their lasting welfare and happiness—if they were sentient. How much more then a human being!”
