तपनीयसुत्त

Tapanīyasutta

Mortifying

“तपनीयञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, धम्मं देसेस्सामि अतपनीयञ्च। तं सुणाथ …पे… कतमो च, भिक्खवे, तपनीयो धम्मो? पाणातिपातो …पे… मिच्छादिट्ठि—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, तपनीयो धम्मो।

“Tapanīyañca vo, bhikkhave, dhammaṁ desessāmi atapanīyañca. Taṁ suṇātha …pe… katamo ca, bhikkhave, tapanīyo dhammo? Pāṇātipāto …pe… micchādiṭṭhi—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, tapanīyo dhammo.

“I will teach you the mortifying principle and the unmortifying. … And what is the mortifying principle? Killing living creatures … wrong view. This is called the mortifying principle.

कतमो च, भिक्खवे, अतपनीयो धम्मो? पाणातिपाता वेरमणी …पे… सम्मादिट्ठि—अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, अतपनीयो धम्मो”ति।

Katamo ca, bhikkhave, atapanīyo dhammo? Pāṇātipātā veramaṇī …pe… sammādiṭṭhi—ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, atapanīyo dhammo”ti.

And what is the unmortifying principle? Not killing living creatures … right view. This is called the unmortifying principle.”
