The Teacher’s Instructions
อถ โข อายสฺมา อุปาลิ เยน ภควา เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา ภควนฺตํ อภิวาเทตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา อุปาลิ ภควนฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Upāli went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
“สาธุ เม, ภนฺเต, ภควา สงฺขิตฺเตน ธมฺมํ เทเสตุ, ยมหํ ภควโต ธมฺมํ สุตฺวา เอโก วูปกฏฺโฐ อปฺปมตฺโต อาตาปี ปหิตตฺโต วิหเรยฺยนฺ”ติฯ
“Sir, may the Buddha please teach me Dhamma in brief. When I’ve heard it, I’ll live alone, withdrawn, diligent, keen, and resolute.”
“เย โข ตฺวํ, อุปาลิ, ธมฺเม ชาเนยฺยาสิ: ‘อิเม ธมฺมา น เอกนฺตนิพฺพิทาย วิราคาย นิโรธาย อุปสมาย อภิญฺญาย สมฺโพธาย นิพฺพานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติ; เอกํเสน, อุปาลิ, ธาเรยฺยาสิ: ‘เนโส ธมฺโม เนโส วินโย เนตํ สตฺถุสาสนนฺ'ติฯ เย จ โข ตฺวํ, อุปาลิ, ธมฺเม ชาเนยฺยาสิ: ‘อิเม ธมฺมา เอกนฺตนิพฺพิทาย วิราคาย นิโรธาย อุปสมาย อภิญฺญาย สมฺโพธาย นิพฺพานาย สํวตฺตนฺตี'ติ; เอกํเสน, อุปาลิ, ธาเรยฺยาสิ: ‘เอโส ธมฺโม เอโส วินโย เอตํ สตฺถุสาสนนฺ'”ติฯ
“Upāli, you might know that certain things don’t lead solely to disillusionment, dispassion, cessation, peace, insight, awakening, and Nibbana. You should definitely bear in mind that such things are not the teaching, not the training, and not the Teacher’s instructions.
