ปฐมอาหุเนยฺยสุตฺต
Worthy of Offerings Dedicated to the Gods (1st)
“อฏฺฐหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ ปาหุเนโยฺย ทกฺขิเณโยฺย อญฺชลิกรณีโย อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ กตเมหิ อฏฺฐหิ?
“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What eight?
อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ …เป… สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุ;
It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken.
พหุสฺสุโต โหติ …เป… ทิฏฺฐิยา สุปฺปฏิวิทฺธา;
They’re learned, remembering and keeping what they’ve learned. These teachings are good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, meaningful and well-phrased, describing a spiritual practice that’s totally full and pure. They are very learned in such teachings, remembering them, reciting them, mentally scrutinizing them, and comprehending them theoretically.
กลฺยาณมิตฺโต โหติ กลฺยาณสหาโย กลฺยาณสมฺปวงฺโก;
They have good friends, companions, and associates.
สมฺมาทิฏฺฐิโก โหติ, สมฺมาทสฺสเนน สมนฺนาคโต;
They have right view, possessing right perspective.
จตุนฺนํ ฌานานํ อาภิเจตสิกานํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมสุขวิหารานํ นิกามลาภี โหติ อกิจฺฉลาภี อกสิรลาภี;
They get the four jhānas—pleasant meditations in the present life that belong to the higher mind—when they want, without trouble or difficulty.
อเนกวิหิตํ ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ อนุสฺสรติ, เสยฺยถิทํ—เอกมฺปิ ชาตึ เทฺวปิ ชาติโย …เป… อิติ สาการํ เสาทฺเทสํ อเนกวิหิตํ ปุพฺเพนิวาสํ อนุสฺสรติ;
They recollect many kinds of past lives, with features and details.
ทิพฺเพน จกฺขุนา วิสุทฺเธน อติกฺกนฺตมานุสเกน …เป… ยถากมฺมูปเค สตฺเต ปชานาติ;
With clairvoyance that is purified and surpasses the human, they see how sentient beings are reborn according to their deeds.
อาสวานํ ขยา …เป… สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ
They realize the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, อฏฺฐหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ …เป… อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสา”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with these eight qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
