The Benefits of Love
เอวํ เม สุตํ—เอกํ สมยํ ภควา สาวตฺถิยํ วิหรติ เชตวเน อนาถปิณฺฑิกสฺส อาราเมฯ ตตฺร โข ภควา ภิกฺขู อามนฺเตสิ: “ภิกฺขโว”ติฯ
So I have heard. At one time the Buddha was staying near Sāvatthī in Jeta’s Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika’s monastery. There the Buddha addressed the bhikkhus, “Bhikkhus!”
“ภทนฺเต”ติ เต ภิกฺขู ภควโต ปจฺจโสฺสสุํฯ ภควา เอตทโวจ:
“Venerable sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“เมตฺตาย, ภิกฺขเว, เจโตวิมุตฺติยา อาเสวิตาย ภาวิตาย พหุลีกตาย ยานีกตาย วตฺถุกตาย อนุฏฺฐิตาย ปริจิตาย สุสมารทฺธาย อฏฺฐานิสํสา ปาฏิกงฺขาฯ กตเม อฏฺฐ? สุขํ สุปติ, สุขํ ปฏิพุชฺฌติ, น ปาปกํ สุปินํ ปสฺสติ, มนุสฺสานํ ปิโย โหติ, อมนุสฺสานํ ปิโย โหติ, เทวตา รกฺขนฺติ, นาสฺส อคฺคิ วา วิสํ วา สตฺถํ วา กมติ, อุตฺตรึ อปฺปฏิวิชฺฌนฺโต พฺรหฺมโลกูปโค โหติฯ เมตฺตาย, ภิกฺขเว, เจโตวิมุตฺติยา อาเสวิตาย ภาวิตาย พหุลีกตาย ยานีกตาย วตฺถุกตาย อนุฏฺฐิตาย ปริจิตาย สุสมารทฺธาย อิเม อฏฺฐานิสํสา ปาฏิกงฺขาติฯ
“Bhikkhus, you can expect eight benefits when the heart’s release by love has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented. What eight? You sleep at ease. You wake happily. You don’t have bad dreams. Humans love you. Non-humans love you. Deities protect you. You can’t be harmed by fire, poison, or blade. If you don’t reach any higher, you’ll be reborn in a Brahmā realm. You can expect these eight benefits when the heart’s release by love has been cultivated, developed, and practiced, made a vehicle and a basis, kept up, consolidated, and properly implemented.
โย จ เมตฺตํ ภาวยติ, อปฺปมาณํ ปฏิสฺสโต; ตนู สํโยชนา โหนฺติ, ปสฺสโต อุปธิกฺขยํฯ
A mindful one who develops limitless love weakens the fetters, seeing the ending of attachments.
เอกมฺปิ เจ ปาณมทุฏฺฐจิตฺโต, เมตฺตายติ กุสลี เตน โหติ; สพฺเพ จ ปาเณ มนสานุกมฺปี, ปหูตมริโย ปกโรติ ปุญฺญํฯ
Loving just one creature with a hateless heart makes you a good person. Compassionate for all creatures, a noble one creates abundant merit.
เย สตฺตสณฺฑํ ปถวึ วิเชตฺวา, ราชิสโย ยชมานา อนุปริยคา; อสฺสเมธํ ปุริสเมธํ, สมฺมาปาสํ วาชเปยฺยํ นิรคฺคฬํฯ
The royal potentates conquered this land and traveled around sponsoring sacrifices—horse sacrifice, human sacrifice, the sacrifices of the ‘casting of the yoke-pin’,
เมตฺตสฺส จิตฺตสฺส สุภาวิตสฺส, กลมฺปิ เต นานุภวนฺติ โสฬสึ; จนฺทปฺปภา ตารคณาว สพฺเพ, ยถา น อคฺฆนฺติ กลมฺปิ โสฬสึฯ
These are not worth a sixteenth part of the mind developed with love, as all the constellations of stars aren’t worth a sixteenth part of the moon’s light.
โย น หนฺติ น ฆาเตติ, น ชินาติ น ชาปเย; เมตฺตํโส สพฺพภูตานํ, เวรํ ตสฺส น เกนจี”ติฯ
Don’t kill or cause others to kill, don’t conquer or encourage others to conquer, with love for all sentient beings, you’ll have no enmity for anyone.”
