A Thoroughbred (2nd)
“จตูหิ, ภิกฺขเว, องฺเคหิ สมนฺนาคโต รญฺโญ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย ราชารโห โหติ ราชโภคฺโค, รญฺโญ องฺคนฺเตว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติฯ กตเมหิ จตูหิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, รญฺโญ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ, พลสมฺปนฺโน จ, ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ, อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตูหิ องฺเคหิ สมนฺนาคโต รญฺโญ ภโทฺร อสฺสาชานีโย ราชารโห โหติ ราชโภคฺโค, รญฺโญ องฺคนฺเตว สงฺขํ คจฺฉติฯ
“Bhikkhus, a fine royal thoroughbred with four factors is worthy of a king, fit to serve a king, and considered a factor of kingship. What four? It’s when a fine royal thoroughbred is beautiful, strong, fast, and well-proportioned. A fine royal thoroughbred with these four factors is worthy of a king. …
เอวเมวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ …เป… อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสฯ กตเมหิ จตูหิ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ, พลสมฺปนฺโน จ, ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ, อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ
In the same way, a bhikkhu with four qualities is worthy of offerings dedicated to the gods, worthy of hospitality, worthy of a religious donation, worthy of veneration with joined palms, and is the supreme field of merit for the world. What four? It’s when a bhikkhu is beautiful, strong, fast, and well proportioned.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ สีลวา โหติ …เป… สมาทาย สิกฺขติ สิกฺขาปเทสุฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน โหติฯ
And how is a bhikkhu beautiful? It’s when a bhikkhu is ethical, restrained in the monastic code, conducting themselves well and seeking alms in suitable places. Seeing danger in the slightest fault, they keep the rules they’ve undertaken. That’s how a bhikkhu is beautiful.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ พลสมฺปนฺโน โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อารทฺธวีริโย วิหรติ อกุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ ปหานาย, กุสลานํ ธมฺมานํ อุปสมฺปทาย, ถามวา ทฬฺหปรกฺกโม อนิกฺขิตฺตธุโร กุสเลสุ ธมฺเมสุฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ พลสมฺปนฺโน โหติฯ
And how is a bhikkhu strong? It’s when a bhikkhu lives with energy roused up for giving up unskillful qualities and embracing skillful qualities. They are strong, staunchly vigorous, not slacking off when it comes to developing skillful qualities. That’s how a bhikkhu is strong.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา …เป… สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติฯ
And how is a bhikkhu fast? It’s when a bhikkhu realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. That’s how a bhikkhu is fast.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน โหติ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ลาภี โหติ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน โหติฯ
And how is a bhikkhu well proportioned? It’s when a bhikkhu receives robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. That’s how a bhikkhu is well proportioned.
อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตูหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ อาหุเนโยฺย โหติ …เป… อนุตฺตรํ ปุญฺญกฺเขตฺตํ โลกสฺสา”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with these four qualities … is the supreme field of merit for the world.”
