Principled Speech
“के नु खो, आवुसो सारिपुत्त, लोके धम्मवादिनो, के लोके सुप्पटिपन्ना, के लोके सुगता”ति?
“Ke nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, loke dhammavādino, ke loke suppaṭipannā, ke loke sugatā”ti?
“Friend Sāriputta, who in the world have principled speech? Who in the world practice well? Who are the Holy Ones in the world?”
“ये खो, आवुसो, रागप्पहानाय धम्मं देसेन्ति, दोसप्पहानाय धम्मं देसेन्ति, मोहप्पहानाय धम्मं देसेन्ति, ते लोके धम्मवादिनो। ये खो, आवुसो, रागस्स पहानाय पटिपन्ना, दोसस्स पहानाय पटिपन्ना, मोहस्स पहानाय पटिपन्ना, ते लोके सुप्पटिपन्ना। येसं खो, आवुसो, रागो पहीनो उच्छिन्नमूलो तालावत्थुकतो अनभावङ्कतो आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मो, दोसो पहीनो उच्छिन्नमूलो तालावत्थुकतो अनभावङ्कतो आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मो, मोहो पहीनो उच्छिन्नमूलो तालावत्थुकतो अनभावङ्कतो आयतिं अनुप्पादधम्मो, ते लोके सुगता”ति।
“Ye kho, āvuso, rāgappahānāya dhammaṁ desenti, dosappahānāya dhammaṁ desenti, mohappahānāya dhammaṁ desenti, te loke dhammavādino. Ye kho, āvuso, rāgassa pahānāya paṭipannā, dosassa pahānāya paṭipannā, mohassa pahānāya paṭipannā, te loke suppaṭipannā. Yesaṁ kho, āvuso, rāgo pahīno ucchinnamūlo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaṅkato āyatiṁ anuppādadhammo, doso pahīno ucchinnamūlo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaṅkato āyatiṁ anuppādadhammo, moho pahīno ucchinnamūlo tālāvatthukato anabhāvaṅkato āyatiṁ anuppādadhammo, te loke sugatā”ti.
“Friend, those who teach principles for giving up greed, hate, and delusion have principled speech in the world. Those who practice for giving up greed, hate, and delusion are practicing well in the world. Those who have given up greed, hate, and delusion—so they’re cut off at the root, made like a palm stump, obliterated, and unable to arise in the future—are Holy Ones in the world.”
“अत्थि पनावुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति?
“Atthi panāvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti?
“But, friend, is there a path and a practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion?”
“अत्थि खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अत्थि पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति।
“Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti.
“There is, friend.”
“कतमो पनावुसो, मग्गो कतमा पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति?
“Katamo panāvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti?
“Well, what is it?”
“अयमेव खो, आवुसो, अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाय, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि …पे… सम्मासमाधि। अयं खो, आवुसो, मग्गो अयं पटिपदा एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाया”ति।
“Ayameva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāya, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi …pe… sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṁ paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā”ti.
“It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. This is the path, this is the practice for giving up that greed, hate, and delusion.”
“भद्दको, आवुसो, मग्गो भद्दिका पटिपदा, एतस्स रागस्स दोसस्स मोहस्स पहानाय। अलञ्च पनावुसो सारिपुत्त, अप्पमादाया”ति।
“Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāya. Alañca panāvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā”ti.
“This is a fine path, a fine practice, for giving up greed, hate, and delusion. Just this much is enough to be diligent.”
