The Four Great Kings (1st)
“อฏฺฐมิยํ, ภิกฺขเว, ปกฺขสฺส จตุนฺนํ มหาราชานํ อมจฺจา ปาริสชฺชา อิมํ โลกํ อนุวิจรนฺติ: ‘กจฺจิ พหู มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺตี'ติฯ
“On the eighth day of the fortnight, bhikkhus, the ministers and counselors of the Four Great Kings wander about the world, thinking: ‘Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents, ascetics and brahmins, honoring the elders in their families, observing and keeping vigil on the Uposatha day, and making merit.’
จาตุทฺทสึ, ภิกฺขเว, ปกฺขสฺส จตุนฺนํ มหาราชานํ ปุตฺตา อิมํ โลกํ อนุวิจรนฺติ: ‘กจฺจิ พหู มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺตี'ติฯ
And on the fourteenth day of the fortnight, the sons of the Four Great Kings wander about the world, thinking: ‘Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit.’
ตทหุ, ภิกฺขเว, อุโปสเถ ปนฺนรเส จตฺตาโร มหาราชาโน สามญฺเญว อิมํ โลกํ อนุวิจรนฺติ: ‘กจฺจิ พหู มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺตี'ติฯ
And on the Uposatha day of the fifteenth, the Four Great Kings themselves wander about the world, thinking: ‘Hopefully most humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit.’
สเจ, ภิกฺขเว, อปฺปกา โหนฺติ มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺติฯ ตเมนํ, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร มหาราชาโน เทวานํ ตาวตึสานํ สุธมฺมาย สภาย สนฺนิสินฺนานํ สนฺนิปติตานํ อาโรเจนฺติ: ‘อปฺปกา โข, มาริสา, มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺตี'ติฯ เตน โข, ภิกฺขเว, เทวา ตาวตึสา อนตฺตมนา โหนฺติ: ‘ทิพฺพา วต, โภ, กายา ปริหายิสฺสนฺติ, ปริปูริสฺสนฺติ อสุรกายา'ติฯ
If only a few humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit, then the Four Great Kings address the gods of the Thirty-Three, seated together in the Hall of Justice: ‘Only a few humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit.’ Then the gods of the Thirty-Three are disappointed, thinking, ‘The heavenly hosts will dwindle, while the demon hosts will swell!’
สเจ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, พหู โหนฺติ มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺติฯ ตเมนํ, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาโร มหาราชาโน เทวานํ ตาวตึสานํ สุธมฺมาย สภาย สนฺนิสินฺนานํ สนฺนิปติตานํ อาโรเจนฺติ: ‘พหู โข, มาริสา, มนุสฺสา มนุเสฺสสุ มตฺเตยฺยา เปตฺเตยฺยา สามญฺญา พฺรหฺมญฺญา กุเล เชฏฺฐาปจายิโน อุโปสถํ อุปวสนฺติ ปฏิชาคโรนฺติ ปุญฺญานิ กโรนฺตี'ติฯ เตน, ภิกฺขเว, เทวา ตาวตึสา อตฺตมนา โหนฺติ: ‘ทิพฺพา วต โภ กายา ปริปูริสฺสนฺติ, ปริหายิสฺสนฺติ อสุรกายา'ติฯ
But if many humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit, then the Four Great Kings address the gods of the Thirty-Three, seated together in the Hall of Justice: ‘Many humans are paying due respect to their parents … and making merit.’ Then the gods of the Thirty-Three are pleased, thinking, ‘The heavenly hosts will swell, while the demon hosts will dwindle!’
ภูตปุพฺพํ, ภิกฺขเว, สกฺโก เทวานมินฺโท เทเว ตาวตึเส อนุนยมาโน ตายํ เวลายํ อิมํ คาถํ อภาสิ:
Once upon a time, Sakka, lord of gods, guiding the gods of the Thirty-Three, recited this verse:
‘จาตุทฺทสึ ปญฺจทสึ, ยา จ ปกฺขสฺส อฏฺฐมี; ปาฏิหาริยปกฺขญฺจ, อฏฺฐงฺคสุสมาคตํ; อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺย, โยปิสฺส มาทิโส นโร'ติฯ
‘Whoever wants to be like me would observe the Uposatha day complete in all eight factors, on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days, and the eighth day of the fortnight, as well as on the fortnightly special displays.’
สา โข ปเนสา, ภิกฺขเว, สกฺเกน เทวานมินฺเทน คาถา ทุคฺคีตา น สุคีตา ทุพฺภาสิตา น สุภาสิตาฯ ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? สกฺโก หิ, ภิกฺขเว, เทวานมินฺโท อวีตราโค อวีตโทโส อวีตโมโหฯ
But that verse was poorly sung by Sakka, lord of gods, not well sung; poorly spoken, not well spoken. Why is that? Sakka, lord of gods, is not free of greed, hate, and delusion.
โย จ โข โส, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อรหํ ขีณาสโว วุสิตวา พฺรหฺมจริโย กตกรณีโย โอหิตภาโร อนุปฺปตฺตสทตฺโถ ปริกฺขีณภวสํโยชโน สมฺมทญฺญาวิมุตฺโต, ตสฺส โข เอตํ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุโน กลฺลํ วจนาย:
But for a bhikkhu who is perfected—with defilements ended, who has completed the spiritual journey, done what had to be done, laid down the burden, achieved their own true goal, utterly ended the fetters of rebirth, and is rightly freed through enlightenment—it is appropriate to say:
‘จาตุทฺทสึ ปญฺจทสึ, ยา จ ปกฺขสฺส อฏฺฐมี; ปาฏิหาริยปกฺขญฺจ, อฏฺฐงฺคสุสมาคตํ; อุโปสถํ อุปวเสยฺย, โยปิสฺส มาทิโส นโร'ติฯ
‘Whoever wants to be like me would observe the Uposatha day, complete in all eight factors, on the fourteenth and the fifteenth days, and the eighth day of the fortnight, as well as on the fortnightly special displays.’
ตํ กิสฺส เหตุ? โส หิ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ วีตราโค วีตโทโส วีตโมโห”ติฯ
Why is that? Because that bhikkhu is free of greed, hate, and delusion.”
