Kinds of Wives

အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ ပုဗ္ဗဏှသမယံ နိဝါသေတွာ ပတ္တစီဝရမာဒါယ ယေန အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကဿ ဂဟပတိဿ နိဝေသနံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ပညတ္တေ အာသနေ နိသီဒိ၊

Then the Buddha robed up in the morning and, taking his bowl and robe, went to the home of the householder Anāthapiṇḍika, where he sat on the seat spread out.

တေန ခေါ ပန သမယေန အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကဿ ဂဟပတိဿ နိဝေသနေ မနုဿာ ဥစ္စာသဒ္ဒါ မဟာသဒ္ဒါ ဟောန္တိ၊ အထ ခေါ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကော ဂဟပတိ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ အနာထပိဏ္ဍိကံ ဂဟပတိံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “ကိံ နု တေ, ဂဟပတိ, နိဝေသနေ မနုဿာ ဥစ္စာသဒ္ဒါ မဟာသဒ္ဒါ ကေဝဋ္ဋာ မညေ မစ္ဆဝိလောပေ”တိ?

Now at that time people in Anāthapiṇḍika’s home were making a dreadful racket. Then the householder Anāthapiṇḍika went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Householder, what’s with the people making that dreadful racket in your home? You’d think it was fishermen hauling in a catch!”

“အယံ, ဘန္တေ, သုဇာတာ ဃရသုဏှာ အဍ္ဎကုလာ အာနီတာ၊ သာ နေဝ သဿုံ အာဒိယတိ, န သသုရံ အာဒိယတိ, န သာမိကံ အာဒိယတိ, ဘဂဝန္တမ္ပိ န သက္ကရောတိ န ဂရုံ ကရောတိ န မာနေတိ န ပူဇေတီ”တိ၊

“Sir, that’s my daughter-in-law Sujātā. She’s been brought here from a wealthy family. She doesn’t obey her mother-in-law or father-in-law or her husband. And she does not honor, respect, esteem, and venerate the Buddha.”

အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ သုဇာတံ ဃရသုဏှံ အာမန္တေသိ: “ဧဟိ, သုဇာတေ”တိ၊

Then the Buddha addressed Sujātā, saying, “Come, Sujātā.”

“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ သုဇာတာ ဃရသုဏှာ ဘဂဝတော ပဋိဿုတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နံ ခေါ သုဇာတံ ဃရသုဏှံ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

“Yes, sir,” she replied. She went up to the Buddha, bowed, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to her:

“သတ္တ ခေါ ဣမာ, သုဇာတေ, ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာယော၊ ကတမာ သတ္တ? ဝဓကသမာ, စောရီသမာ, အယျသမာ, မာတာသမာ, ဘဂိနီသမာ, သခီသမာ, ဒါသီသမာ၊ ဣမာ ခေါ, သုဇာတေ, သတ္တ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာယော၊ တာသံ တွံ ကတမာ”တိ?

“Sujātā, a man can have seven kinds of wife. What seven? A wife like a killer, a wife like a thief, a wife like a lord, a wife like a mother, a wife like a sister, a wife like a friend, and a wife like a bondservant. These are the kinds of wife that a man can have. Which one of these are you?”

“န ခေါ အဟံ, ဘန္တေ, ဣမဿ ဘဂဝတာ သင်္ခိတ္တေန ဘာသိတဿ ဝိတ္ထာရေန အတ္ထံ အာဇာနာမိ၊ သာဓု မေ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ တထာ ဓမ္မံ ဒေသေတု ယထာဟံ ဣမဿ ဘဂဝတာ သင်္ခိတ္တေန ဘာသိတဿ ဝိတ္ထာရေန အတ္ထံ ဇာနေယျန်”တိ၊

“Sir, I don’t understand the detailed meaning of what the Buddha has said in brief. Please teach me this matter so I can understand the detailed meaning.”

“တေန ဟိ, သုဇာတေ, သုဏာဟိ, သာဓုကံ မနသိ ကရောဟိ; ဘာသိဿာမီ”တိ၊

“Well then, Sujātā, listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”

“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ သုဇာတာ ဃရသုဏှာ ဘဂဝတော ပစ္စဿောသိ၊ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

“Yes, sir,” she replied. The Buddha said this:

“ပဒုဋ္ဌစိတ္တာ အဟိတာနုကမ္ပိနီ,
အညေသု ရတ္တာ အတိမညတေ ပတိံ;
ဓနေန ကီတဿ ဝဓာယ ဥဿုကာ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘ဝဓာ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

“With a mind full of hate and no kindness,
lusting for others, looking down on her husband,
she longs to murder him who paid the price for her.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a killer.

ယံ ဣတ္ထိယာ ဝိန္ဒတိ သာမိကော ဓနံ,
သိပ္ပံ ဝဏိဇ္ဇဉ္စ ကသိံ အဓိဋ္ဌဟံ;
အပ္ပမ္ပိ တဿ အပဟာတုမိစ္ဆတိ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘စောရီ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

A woman’s husband earns his wealth
by applying oneself to a profession, trade, or farming.
And even if it’s only a little, she wants to take it.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a thief.

အကမ္မကာမာ အလသာ မဟဂ္ဃသာ,
ဖရုသာ စ စဏ္ဍီ ဒုရုတ္တဝါဒိနီ;
ဥဋ္ဌာယကာနံ အဘိဘုယျ ဝတ္တတိ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘အယျာ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

She’s an idle glutton who doesn’t want to work.
Her words are harsh, fierce, and rude.
She rules over him, though he rises early.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a lord.

ယာ သဗ္ဗဒါ ဟောတိ ဟိတာနုကမ္ပိနီ,
မာတာဝ ပုတ္တံ အနုရက္ခတေ ပတိံ;
တတော ဓနံ သမ္ဘတမဿ ရက္ခတိ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘မာတာ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

She’s always caring and kind,
looking after her husband like a mother her child.
She keeps the wealth that he has earned secure.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a mother.

ယထာပိ ဇေဋ္ဌာ ဘဂိနီ ကနိဋ္ဌကာ,
သဂါရဝါ ဟောတိ သကမှိ သာမိကေ;
ဟိရီမနာ ဘတ္တုဝသာနုဝတ္တိနီ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘ဘဂိနီ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

She respects her husband
as a younger sister respects her elder.
Conscientious, she does what her husband says.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a sister.

ယာစီဓ ဒိသွာန ပတိံ ပမောဒတိ,
သခီ သခါရံဝ စိရဿမာဂတံ;
ကောလေယျကာ သီလဝတီ ပတိဗ္ဗတာ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘သခီ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

She’s delighted to see him,
like one reunited with a long-lost friend.
She’s well-raised, virtuous, and devoted.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a friend.

အက္ကုဒ္ဓသန္တာ ဝဓဒဏ္ဍတဇ္ဇိတာ,
အဒုဋ္ဌစိတ္တာ ပတိနော တိတိက္ခတိ;
အက္ကောဓနာ ဘတ္တုဝသာနုဝတ္တိနီ,
ယာ ဧဝရူပါ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာ;
‘ဒါသီ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ၊

She has no anger when threatened with violence by the rod.
Without hate or anger,
she endures her husband and does what he says.
A man’s wife of this sort
is called a wife and a bondservant.

ယာစီဓ ဘရိယာ ဝဓကာတိ ဝုစ္စတိ,
‘စောရီ စ အယျာ'တိ စ ယာ ပဝုစ္စတိ;
ဒုဿီလရူပါ ဖရုသာ အနာဒရာ,
ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ နိရယံ ဝဇန္တိ တာ၊

The kinds of wives here called
killer, thief, and lord;
immoral, harsh, and lacking regard for others,
when their body breaks up they set course for hell.

ယာစီဓ မာတာ ဘဂိနီ သခီတိ စ,
‘ဒါသီ စ ဘရိယာ'တိ စ သာ ပဝုစ္စတိ;
သီလေ ဌိတတ္တာ စိရရတ္တသံဝုတာ,
ကာယဿ ဘေဒါ သုဂတိံ ဝဇန္တိ တာတိ၊

But the kinds of wives here called
mother, sister, friend, and bondservant;
steadfast in their own morality, restrained for a long time,
when their body breaks up they set course for a good place.

ဣမာ ခေါ, သုဇာတေ, သတ္တ ပုရိသဿ ဘရိယာယော၊ တာသံ တွံ ကတမာ”တိ?

Sujātā, these are the seven kinds of wife that a man can have. Which one of these are you?”

“အဇ္ဇတဂ္ဂေ မံ, ဘန္တေ, ဘဂဝါ ဒါသီသမံ သာမိကဿ ဘရိယံ ဓာရေတူ”တိ၊

“Sir, from this day forth may the Buddha remember me as a wife like a bondservant.”
