A Wild Colt
“ตโย จ, ภิกฺขเว, อสฺสขฬุงฺเก เทเสสฺสามิ ตโย จ ปุริสขฬุงฺเก ตโย จ อสฺสปรเสฺส ตโย จ ปุริสปรเสฺส ตโย จ ภทฺเท อสฺสาชานีเย ตโย จ ภทฺเท ปุริสาชานีเยฯ ตํ สุณาถฯ (…)
“Bhikkhus, I will teach you about three wild colts and three wild people; three excellent horses and three excellent people; and three fine thoroughbred horses and three fine thoroughbred people. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.
กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย อสฺสขฬุงฺกา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ อสฺสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, น วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน, น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโนฯ อิธ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ อสฺสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ, น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโนฯ อิธ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ อสฺสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย อสฺสขฬุงฺกาฯ
And what are the three wild colts? One wild colt is fast, but not beautiful or well proportioned. Another wild colt is fast and beautiful, but not well proportioned. While another wild colt is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned. These are the three wild colts.
กตเม จ, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ปุริสขฬุงฺกา? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุริสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, น วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน, น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโนฯ อิธ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุริสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ, น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโนฯ อิธ ปน, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปุริสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ
And what are the three wild people? One wild person is fast, but not beautiful or well proportioned. Another wild person is fast and beautiful, but not well proportioned. While another wild person is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ปุริสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, น วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ ‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขสมุทโย'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรโธ'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติ, ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ยถาภูตํ ปชานาติฯ อิทมสฺส ชวสฺมึ วทามิฯ อภิธมฺเม โข ปน อภิวินเย ปญฺหํ ปุฏฺโฐ สํสาเทติ, โน วิสฺสชฺเชติฯ อิทมสฺส น วณฺณสฺมึ วทามิฯ น โข ปน ลาภี โหติ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํฯ อิทมสฺส น อาโรหปริณาหสฺมึ วทามิฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปุริสขฬุงฺโก ชวสมฺปนฺโน โหติ, น วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน น อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโนฯ
And how is a wild person fast, but not beautiful or well proportioned? It’s when a bhikkhu truly understands: ‘This is suffering’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’. This is how they’re fast, I say. But when asked a question about the teaching or training, they falter without answering. This is how they’re not beautiful, I say. And they don’t receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. This is how they’re not well proportioned, I say. This is how a wild person is fast, but not beautiful or well proportioned.

What are the three excellent people? One excellent person … is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.

And how is an excellent person … fast, beautiful, and well proportioned? It’s when a bhikkhu, with the ending of the five lower fetters, is reborn spontaneously. They’re extinguished there, and are not liable to return from that world. This is how they’re fast, I say. When asked a question about the teaching or training, they answer without faltering. This is how they’re beautiful, I say. They receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. This is how they’re well proportioned, I say. This is how an excellent person fast, beautiful, and well proportioned. These are the three excellent people.

And what are the three fine thoroughbred people? One fine thoroughbred person … is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned.
กถญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, ภทฺโท ปุริสาชานีโย …เป… ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ อาสวานํ ขยา อนาสวํ เจโตวิมุตฺตึ ปญฺญาวิมุตฺตึ ทิฏฺเฐว ธมฺเม สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา อุปสมฺปชฺช วิหรติฯ อิทมสฺส ชวสฺมึ วทามิฯ อภิธมฺเม โข ปน อภิวินเย ปญฺหํ ปุฏฺโฐ วิสฺสชฺเชติ, โน สํสาเทติฯ อิทมสฺส วณฺณสฺมึ วทามิฯ ลาภี โข ปน โหติ จีวรปิณฺฑปาตเสนาสนคิลานปจฺจยเภสชฺชปริกฺขารานํฯ อิทมสฺส อาโรหปริณาหสฺมึ วทามิฯ เอวํ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ภทฺโท ปุริสาชานีโย ชวสมฺปนฺโน จ โหติ วณฺณสมฺปนฺโน จ อาโรหปริณาหสมฺปนฺโน จฯ อิเม โข, ภิกฺขเว, ตโย ภทฺทา ปุริสาชานียา”ติฯ
And how is a fine thoroughbred person … fast, beautiful, and well proportioned? It’s a bhikkhu who realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom in this very life. And they live having realized it with their own insight due to the ending of defilements. This is how they’re fast, I say. When asked a question about the teaching or training, they answer without faltering. This is how they’re beautiful, I say. They receive robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicines and supplies for the sick. This is how they’re well proportioned, I say. This is how a fine thoroughbred person is fast, beautiful, and well proportioned. These are the three fine thoroughbred people.”
