อถ โข อายสฺมา มหาโกฏฺฐิโก เยนายสฺมา สาริปุตฺโต เตนุปสงฺกมิ; อุปสงฺกมิตฺวา อายสฺมตา สาริปุตฺเตน สทฺธึ สมฺโมทิฯ สมฺโมทนียํ กถํ สารณียํ วีติสาเรตฺวา เอกมนฺตํ นิสีทิฯ เอกมนฺตํ นิสินฺโน โข อายสฺมา มหาโกฏฺฐิโก อายสฺมนฺตํ สาริปุตฺตํ เอตทโวจ:
Then Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita went up to Venerable Sāriputta, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to Sāriputta:
“กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ สมฺปรายเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Friend Sāriputta, is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced in this life be experienced by me in lives to come’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not, friend.”
“กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ สมฺปรายเวทนียํ ตํ เม กมฺมํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced in lives to come be experienced by me in this life’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ สุขเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ ทุกฺขเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced as pleasant be experienced by me as painful’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ ปนาวุโส, สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ ทุกฺขเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ สุขเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced as painful be experienced by me as pleasant’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ ปริปกฺกเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ อปริปกฺกเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced when ripe be experienced by me when unripe’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ อปริปกฺกเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ ปริปกฺกเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced when unripe be experienced by me when ripe’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ พหุเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ อปฺปเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced a lot be experienced by me a little’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ อปฺปเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ พหุเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced a little be experienced by me a lot’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ เวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ อเวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds to be experienced by me be not experienced’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ‘ยํ กมฺมํ อเวทนียํ, ตํ เม กมฺมํ เวทนียํ โหตู'ติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
“Then is the spiritual life lived under the Buddha for this purpose: ‘May deeds not to be experienced be experienced’?”
“โน หิทํ, อาวุโส”ฯ
“Certainly not.”
“‘กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ยํ กมฺมํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมเวทนียํ ตํ เม กมฺมํ สมฺปรายเวทนียํ โหตูติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี'ติ, อิติ ปุฏฺโฐ สมาโน ‘โน หิทํ, อาวุโส'ติ วเทสิฯ
“Friend Sāriputta, when you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds to be experienced in this life are experienced in lives to come, you said, ‘Certainly not’.
‘กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ยํ กมฺมํ สมฺปรายเวทนียํ ตํ เม กมฺมํ ทิฏฺฐธมฺมเวทนียํ โหตูติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี'ติ, อิติ ปุฏฺโฐ สมาโน ‘โน หิทํ, อาวุโส'ติ วเทสิฯ
When you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds to be experienced in lives to come are experienced in this life …
‘กึ นุ โข, อาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ยํ กมฺมํ สุขเวทนียํ ตํ เม กมฺมํ ทุกฺขเวทนียํ โหตูติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี'ติ, อิติ ปุฏฺโฐ สมาโน ‘โน หิทํ, อาวุโส'ติ วเทสิฯ

‘กึ ปนาวุโส สาริปุตฺต, ยํ กมฺมํ อเวทนียํ ตํ เม กมฺมํ เวทนียํ โหตูติ, เอตสฺส อตฺถาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี'ติ, อิติ ปุฏฺโฐ สมาโน ‘โน หิทํ, อาวุโส'ติ วเทสิฯ อถ กิมตฺถํ จรหาวุโส, ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติ?
When you were asked whether the spiritual life was lived under the Buddha so that deeds not to be experienced are experienced, you said, ‘Certainly not.’ Then what exactly is the purpose of leading the spiritual life under the Buddha?”
“ยํ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส, อญฺญาตํ อทิฏฺฐํ อปฺปตฺตํ อสจฺฉิกตํ อนภิสเมตํ, ตสฺส ญาณาย ทสฺสนาย ปตฺติยา สจฺฉิกิริยาย อภิสมยาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตีติฯ
“Friend, the spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend that which is unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended.”
กึ ปนสฺสาวุโส, อญฺญาตํ อทิฏฺฐํ อปฺปตฺตํ อสจฺฉิกตํ อนภิสเมตํ, ยสฺส ญาณาย ทสฺสนาย ปตฺติยา สจฺฉิกิริยาย อภิสมยาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตีติ?
“But what is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended?”
‘อิทํ ทุกฺขนฺ'ติ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส, อญฺญาตํ อทิฏฺฐํ อปฺปตฺตํ อสจฺฉิกตํ อนภิสเมตํฯ ตสฺส ญาณาย ทสฺสนาย ปตฺติยา สจฺฉิกิริยาย อภิสมยาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสติฯ ‘อยํ ทุกฺขสมุทโย'ติ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรโธ'ติ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส …เป… ‘อยํ ทุกฺขนิโรธคามินี ปฏิปทา'ติ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส, อญฺญาตํ อทิฏฺฐํ อปฺปตฺตํ อสจฺฉิกตํ อนภิสเมตํฯ ตสฺส ญาณาย ทสฺสนาย ปตฺติยา สจฺฉิกิริยาย อภิสมยาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสติฯ อิทํ ขฺวสฺส, อาวุโส, อญฺญาตํ อทิฏฺฐํ อปฺปตฺตํ อสจฺฉิกตํ อนภิสเมตํฯ ตสฺส ญาณาย ทสฺสนาย ปตฺติยา สจฺฉิกิริยาย อภิสมยาย ภควติ พฺรหฺมจริยํ วุสฺสตี”ติฯ
“‘This is suffering.’ … ‘This is the origin of suffering.’ … ‘This is the cessation of suffering.’ … ‘This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering.’ … This is the unknown, unseen, unattained, unrealized, and uncomprehended. The spiritual life is lived under the Buddha to know, see, attain, realize, and comprehend this.”
