අථ ඛෝ ජාණුස්සෝණි බ්රාහ්මණෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවතා සද්ධිං සම්මෝදි. සම්මෝදනීයං කථං සාරණීයං වීතිසාරේත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නෝ ඛෝ ජාණුස්සෝණි බ්රාහ්මණෝ භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච:
Then the brahmin Jānussoṇi went up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him. When the greetings and polite conversation were over, he sat down to one side and said to the Buddha:
“අහඤ්හි, භෝ ගෝතම, ඒවංවාදී ඒවංදිට්ඨි: ‘නත්ථි යෝ මරණධම්මෝ සමානෝ න භායති, න සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජති මරණස්සා(අ)”ති.
“Master Gotama, this is my doctrine and view: ‘All those liable to death are frightened and terrified of death.’”
“අත්ථි, බ්රාහ්මණ, මරණධම්මෝ සමානෝ භායති, සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජති මරණස්ස; අත්ථි පන, බ්රාහ්මණ, මරණධම්මෝ සමානෝ න භායති, න සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජති මරණස්ස.
“Brahmin, some of those liable to death are frightened and terrified of death. But some of those liable to death are not frightened and terrified of death.
කතමෝ ච, බ්රාහ්මණ, මරණධම්මෝ සමානෝ භායති, සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජති මරණස්ස? ඉධ, බ්රාහ්මණ, ඒකච්චෝ කාමේසු අවීතරාගෝ හෝති අවිගතච්ඡන්දෝ අවිගතපේමෝ අවිගතපිපාසෝ අවිගතපරිළාහෝ අවිගතතණ්හෝ. තමේනං අඤ්ඤතරෝ ගාළ්හෝ රෝගාතඞ්කෝ ඵුසති. තස්ස අඤ්ඤතරේන ගාළ්හේන රෝගාතඞ්කේන ඵුට්ඨස්ස ඒවං හෝති: ‘පියා වත මං කාමා ජහිස්සන්ති, පියේ චාහං කාමේ ජහිස්සාමී(අ)ති. සෝ සෝචති කිලමති පරිදේවති, උරත්තාළිං කන්දති, සම්මෝහං ආපජ්ජති. අයං ඛෝ, බ්රාහ්මණ, මරණධම්මෝ සමානෝ භායති, සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජති මරණස්ස.
Who are those frightened of death? It’s someone who isn’t free of greed, desire, fondness, thirst, passion, and craving for sensual pleasures. When they fall seriously ill, they think: ‘The sensual pleasures that I love so much will leave me, and I’ll leave them.’ They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion. This is someone who is frightened of death.

Furthermore, it’s someone who hasn’t done good and skillful things that keep them safe, but has done bad, violent, and depraved things. When they fall seriously ill, they think: ‘Well, I haven’t done good and skillful things that keep me safe. And I have done bad, violent, and depraved things. When I depart, I’ll go to the place where people who’ve done such things go.’ They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion. This, too, is someone who is frightened of death.

Furthermore, it’s someone who’s doubtful, uncertain, and undecided about the true teaching. When they fall seriously ill, they think: ‘I’m doubtful, uncertain, and undecided about the true teaching.’ They sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion. This, too, is someone who is frightened of death. These are the four people liable to death who are frightened and terrified of death.

Furthermore, it’s someone who hasn’t done bad, violent, and corrupt deeds, but has done good and skillful deeds that keep them safe. When they fall seriously ill, they think: ‘Well, I haven’t done bad, violent, and depraved things. And I have done good and skillful deeds that keep me safe. When I depart, I’ll go to the place where people who’ve done such things go.’ They don’t sorrow and wail and lament, beating their breast and falling into confusion. This, too, is someone who’s not frightened of death.

ඉමේ ඛෝ, බ්රාහ්මණ, චත්තාරෝ මරණධම්මා සමානා න භායන්ති, න සන්තාසං ආපජ්ජන්ති මරණස්සා”ති.
These are the four people liable to death who are not frightened and terrified of death.”
“අභික්කන්තං, භෝ ගෝතම, අභික්කන්තං, භෝ ගෝතම …පේ… උපාසකං මං භවං ගෝතමෝ ධාරේතු අජ්ජතග්ගේ පාණුපේතං සරණං ගතන්”ති.
“Excellent, Master Gotama! … From this day forth, may Master Gotama remember me as a lay follower who has gone for refuge for life.”
