“จตฺตาริมานิ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมานิ มยา สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา ปเวทิตานิฯ กตมานิ จตฺตาริ?
“Bhikkhus, I declare these four kinds of deeds, having realized them with my own insight. What four?
อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหํ กณฺหวิปากํ;
There are dark deeds with dark results;
อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ สุกฺกํ สุกฺกวิปากํ;
bright deeds with bright results;
อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหสุกฺกํ กณฺหสุกฺกวิปากํ;
dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results; and
อตฺถิ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกวิปากํ กมฺมกฺขยาย สํวตฺตติฯ
neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหํ กณฺหวิปากํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปาณาติปาตี โหติ, อทินฺนาทายี โหติ, กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารี โหติ, มุสาวาที โหติ, สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐายี โหติฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหํ กณฺหวิปากํฯ
And what are the dark deeds with dark results? It’s when someone kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and uses alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. These are called dark deeds with dark results.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ สุกฺกํ สุกฺกวิปากํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ ปาณาติปาตา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, อทินฺนาทานา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, กาเมสุมิจฺฉาจารา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, มุสาวาทา ปฏิวิรโต โหติ, สุราเมรยมชฺชปมาทฏฺฐานา ปฏิวิรโต โหติฯ อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ สุกฺกํ สุกฺกวิปากํฯ
And what are bright deeds with bright results? It’s when someone doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or use alcoholic drinks that cause negligence. These are called bright deeds with bright results.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหสุกฺกํ กณฺหสุกฺกวิปากํ? อิธ, ภิกฺขเว, เอกจฺโจ สพฺยาพชฺฌมฺปิ อพฺยาพชฺฌมฺปิ กายสงฺขารํ อภิสงฺขโรติ …เป… อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ กณฺหสุกฺกํ กณฺหสุกฺกวิปากํฯ
And what are dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results? It’s when someone creates both hurtful and pleasing habitual functioning patterns of the body, speech, and mind. These are called dark and bright deeds with dark and bright results.
กตมญฺจ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกวิปากํ กมฺมกฺขยาย สํวตฺตติ? ตตฺร, ภิกฺขเว, ยมิทํ กมฺมํ กณฺหํ กณฺหวิปากํ …เป… อิทํ วุจฺจติ, ภิกฺขเว, กมฺมํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกํ อกณฺหอสุกฺกวิปากํ กมฺมกฺขยาย สํวตฺตติฯ
And what are neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds? It’s the intention to give up dark deeds with dark results, bright deeds with bright results, and both dark and bright deeds with both dark and bright results. These are called neither dark nor bright deeds with neither dark nor bright results, which lead to the ending of deeds.
อิมานิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, จตฺตาริ กมฺมานิ มยา สยํ อภิญฺญา สจฺฉิกตฺวา ปเวทิตานี”ติฯ
These are the four kinds of deeds that I declare, having realized them with my own insight.”
