The Donkey
“සේය්යථාපි, භික්ඛවේ, ගද්රභෝ ගෝගණං පිට්ඨිතෝ පිට්ඨිතෝ අනුබන්ධෝ හෝති: ‘අහම්පි දම්මෝ, අහම්පි දම්මෝ(අ)ති. තස්ස න තාදිසෝ වණ්ණෝ හෝති සේය්යථාපි ගුන්නං, න තාදිසෝ සරෝ හෝති සේය්යථාපි ගුන්නං, න තාදිසං පදං හෝති සේය්යථාපි ගුන්නං. සෝ ගෝගණංයේව පිට්ඨිතෝ පිට්ඨිතෝ අනුබන්ධෝ හෝති: ‘අහම්පි දම්මෝ, අහම්පි දම්මෝ(අ)ති.
“Suppose, bhikkhus, a donkey followed behind a herd of cattle, thinking: ‘I can moo too! I can moo too!’ But it doesn’t look like a cow, or sound like a cow, or leave a footprint like a cow. Still it follows behind a herd of cattle, thinking: ‘I can moo too! I can moo too!’
ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, භික්ඛවේ, ඉධේකච්චෝ භික්ඛු භික්ඛුසඞ්ඝං පිට්ඨිතෝ පිට්ඨිතෝ අනුබන්ධෝ හෝති: ‘අහම්පි භික්ඛු, අහම්පි භික්ඛූ(අ)ති. තස්ස න තාදිසෝ ඡන්දෝ හෝති අධිසීලසික්ඛාසමාදානේ සේය්යථාපි අඤ්ඤේසං භික්ඛූනං, න තාදිසෝ ඡන්දෝ හෝති අධිචිත්තසික්ඛාසමාදානේ සේය්යථාපි අඤ්ඤේසං භික්ඛූනං, න තාදිසෝ ඡන්දෝ හෝති අධිපඤ්ඤාසික්ඛාසමාදානේ සේය්යථාපි අඤ්ඤේසං භික්ඛූනං. සෝ භික්ඛුසඞ්ඝංයේව පිට්ඨිතෝ පිට්ඨිතෝ අනුබන්ධෝ හෝති: ‘අහම්පි භික්ඛු, අහම්පි භික්ඛූ(අ)ති.
In the same way, some bhikkhu follows behind the bhikkhu Saṅgha, thinking: ‘I’m a monk too! I’m a monk too!’ But they don’t have the same enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom as the other bhikkhus. Still they follow behind the bhikkhu Saṇgha, thinking: ‘I’m a monk too! I’m a monk too!’
තස්මාතිහ, භික්ඛවේ, ඒවං සික්ඛිතබ්බං: ‘තිබ්බෝ නෝ ඡන්දෝ භවිස්සති අධිසීලසික්ඛාසමාදානේ, තිබ්බෝ නෝ ඡන්දෝ භවිස්සති අධිචිත්තසික්ඛාසමාදානේ, තිබ්බෝ නෝ ඡන්දෝ භවිස්සති අධිපඤ්ඤාසික්ඛාසමාදානේ(අ)ති. ඒවඤ්හි වෝ, භික්ඛවේ, සික්ඛිතබ්බන්”ති.
So you should train like this: ‘We will have keen enthusiasm for undertaking the training in the higher ethics, the higher mind, and the higher wisdom.’ That’s how you should train.”
