Observing Suffering

सावत्थिनिदानं।

Sāvatthinidānaṁ.

At Sāvatthī.

“सद्धापब्बजितस्स, भिक्खवे, कुलपुत्तस्स अयमनुधम्मो होति—यं रूपे दुक्खानुपस्सी विहरेय्य। वेदनाय … सञ्ञाय … सङ्खारेसु … विञ्ञाणे दुक्खानुपस्सी विहरेय्य …पे… ‘परिमुच्चति दुक्खस्माऽति वदामी”ति।

“Saddhāpabbajitassa, bhikkhave, kulaputtassa ayamanudhammo hoti—yaṁ rūpe dukkhānupassī vihareyya. Vedanāya … saññāya … saṅkhāresu … viññāṇe dukkhānupassī vihareyya …pe… ‘parimuccati dukkhasmā’ti vadāmī”ti.

“Bhikkhus, when a gentleman has gone forth out of faith, this is what’s in line with the teachings. They should meditate watching, again and again, suffering in form, feeling, perception, functioning patterns, and consciousness. … They’re freed from suffering, I say.”
