“Bhikkhus, a bhikkhu with five qualities fails, and doesn’t establish themselves in the true teaching. What five? A bhikkhu who is faithless … shameless … imprudent … lazy … witless fails, and doesn’t establish themselves in the true teaching. A bhikkhu with these five qualities fails, and doesn’t establish themselves in the true teaching.
ปญฺจหิ, ภิกฺขเว, ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ กตเมหิ ปญฺจหิ? สทฺโธ, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ หิรีมา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ โอตฺตปฺปี, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ อารทฺธวีริโย, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ ปญฺญวา, ภิกฺขเว, ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเมฯ อิเมหิ โข, ภิกฺขเว, ปญฺจหิ ธมฺเมหิ สมนฺนาคโต ภิกฺขุ น จวติ, ปติฏฺฐาติ สทฺธมฺเม”ติฯ
A bhikkhu with five qualities doesn’t fail, and establishes themselves in the true teaching. What five? A bhikkhu who is faithful … conscientious … prudent … energetic … wise doesn’t fail, and establishes themselves in the true teaching. A bhikkhu with these five qualities doesn’t fail, and establishes themselves in the true teaching.”
