භරණ්ඩුකාලාමසුත්ත
Bharaṇḍu Kālāma
ඒකං සමයං භගවා කෝසලේසු චාරිකං චරමානෝ යේන කපිලවත්ථු තදවසරි.
At one time the Buddha was wandering in the land of the Kosalans when he arrived at Kapilavatthu.
අස්සෝසි ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ: “භගවා කිර කපිලවත්ථුං අනුප්පත්තෝ”ති. අථ ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා ඒකමන්තං අට්ඨාසි. ඒකමන්තං ඨිතං ඛෝ මහානාමං සක්කං භගවා ඒතදවෝච: “ගච්ඡ, මහානාම, කපිලවත්ථුස්මිං, තථාරූපං ආවසථං ජාන යත්ථජ්ජ මයං ඒකරත්තිං විහරේය්යාමා”ති.
Mahānāma the Sakyan heard that he had arrived. He went up to the Buddha, bowed, and stood to one side. The Buddha said to him, “Go into Kapilavatthu, Mahānāma, and check if there’s a suitable guest house where I can spend the night.”
“ඒවං, භන්තේ”ති ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ භගවතෝ පටිස්සුත්වා කපිලවත්ථුං පවිසිත්වා කේවලකප්පං කපිලවත්ථුං අන්වාහිණ්ඩන්තෝ නාද්දස කපිලවත්ථුස්මිං තථාරූපං ආවසථං යත්ථජ්ජ භගවා ඒකරත්තිං විහරේය්ය.
“Yes, sir,” replied Mahānāma. He returned to Kapilavatthu and searched all over the city, but he couldn’t see a suitable guest house for the Buddha to spend the night.
අථ ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච: “නත්ථි, භන්තේ, කපිලවත්ථුස්මිං තථාරූපෝ ආවසථෝ යත්ථජ්ජ භගවා ඒකරත්තිං විහරේය්ය. අයං, භන්තේ, භරණ්ඩු කාලාමෝ භගවතෝ පුරාණසබ්රහ්මචාරී. තස්සජ්ජ භගවා අස්සමේ ඒකරත්තිං විහරතූ”ති.
Then Mahānāma went up to the Buddha, and said to him, “Sir, there’s no suitable guest house in Kapilavatthu for you to spend the night. But there is this Bharaṇḍu the Kālāma, who used to be the Buddha’s spiritual companion. Why don’t you spend the night at his hermitage?”
“ගච්ඡ, මහානාම, සන්ථරං පඤ්ඤාපේහී”ති.
“Go, Mahānāma, and set out a mat.”
“ඒවං, භන්තේ”ති ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ භගවතෝ පටිස්සුත්වා යේන භරණ්ඩුස්ස කාලාමස්ස අස්සමෝ තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා සන්ථරං පඤ්ඤාපේත්වා උදකං ඨපේත්වා පාදානං ධෝවනාය යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා භගවන්තං ඒතදවෝච: “සන්ථතෝ, භන්තේ, සන්ථාරෝ, උදකං ඨපිතං පාදානං ධෝවනාය. යස්සදානි, භන්තේ, භගවා කාලං මඤ්ඤතී”ති.
“Yes, sir,” replied Mahānāma. He went to Bharaṇḍu’s hermitage, where he set out a mat, and got foot-washing water ready. Then he went back to the Buddha and said to him, “The mat and foot-washing water are set out. Please, sir, go at your convenience.”
අථ ඛෝ භගවා යේන භරණ්ඩුස්ස කාලාමස්ස අස්සමෝ තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා පඤ්ඤත්තේ ආසනේ නිසීදි. නිසජ්ජ ඛෝ භගවා පාදේ පක්ඛාලේසි.
Then the Buddha went to Bharaṇḍu’s hermitage, sat down on the seat spread out, and washed his feet.
අථ ඛෝ මහානාමස්ස සක්කස්ස ඒතදහෝසි: “අකාලෝ ඛෝ අජ්ජ භගවන්තං පයිරුපාසිතුං. කිලන්තෝ භගවා. ස්වේ දානාහං භගවන්තං පයිරුපාසිස්සාමී”ති භගවන්තං අභිවාදේත්වා පදක්ඛිණං කත්වා පක්කාමි.
Then it occurred to Mahānāma, “It’s too late to pay homage to the Buddha today. He’s tired. Tomorrow I’ll pay homage to the Buddha.” He bowed to the Buddha and respectfully circled him, keeping him on his right, then he left.
අථ ඛෝ මහානාමෝ සක්කෝ තස්සා රත්තියා අච්චයේන යේන භගවා තේනුපසඞ්කමි; උපසඞ්කමිත්වා ඒකමන්තං නිසීදි. ඒකමන්තං නිසින්නං ඛෝ මහානාමං සක්කං භගවා ඒතදවෝච:
Then, when the night had passed, Mahānāma the Sakyan went up to the Buddha, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to him:
“තයෝ ඛෝමේ, මහානාම, සත්ථාරෝ සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මිං. කතමේ තයෝ? ඉධ, මහානාම, ඒකච්චෝ සත්ථා කාමානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති; න රූපානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති, න වේදනානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති. ඉධ පන, මහානාම, ඒකච්චෝ සත්ථා කාමානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති, රූපානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති; න වේදනානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති. ඉධ පන, මහානාම, ඒකච්චෝ සත්ථා කාමානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති, රූපානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති, වේදනානං පරිඤ්ඤං පඤ්ඤාපේති. ඉමේ ඛෝ, මහානාම, තයෝ සත්ථාරෝ සන්තෝ සංවිජ්ජමානා ලෝකස්මිං. ඉමේසං, මහානාම, තිණ්ණං සත්ථාරානං ඒකා නිට්ඨා උදාහු පුථු නිට්ඨා”ති?
“Mahānāma, there are these three teachers found in the world. What three? One teacher advocates the complete understanding of sensual pleasures, but not of sights or feelings. One teacher advocates the complete understanding of sensual pleasures and sights, but not of feelings. One teacher advocates the complete understanding of sensual pleasures, sights, and feelings. These are the three teachers found in the world. Do these three teachers have the same goal or different goals?”
ඒවං වුත්තේ, භරණ්ඩු කාලාමෝ මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “ඒකාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
When he said this, Bharaṇḍu said to Mahānāma, “Say they’re the same, Mahānāma!”
ඒවං වුත්තේ, භගවා මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “නානාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
The Buddha said, “Say they’re different, Mahānāma!”
දුතියම්පි ඛෝ භරණ්ඩු කාලාමෝ මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “ඒකාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
For a second time, Bharaṇḍu said, “Say they’re the same, Mahānāma!”
දුතියම්පි ඛෝ භගවා මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “නානාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
The Buddha said, “Say they’re different, Mahānāma!”
තතියම්පි ඛෝ භරණ්ඩු කාලාමෝ මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “ඒකාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
For a third time, Bharaṇḍu said, “Say they’re the same, Mahānāma!”
තතියම්පි ඛෝ භගවා මහානාමං සක්කං ඒතදවෝච: “නානාති, මහානාම, වදේහී”ති.
The Buddha said, “Say they’re different, Mahānāma!”
අථ ඛෝ භරණ්ඩු කාලාමස්ස ඒතදහෝසි: “මහේසක්ඛස්ස වතම්හි මහානාමස්ස සක්කස්ස සම්මුඛා සමණේන ගෝතමේන යාවතතියං අපසාදිතෝ. යන්නූනාහං කපිලවත්ථුම්හා පක්කමේය්යන්”ති. අථ ඛෝ භරණ්ඩු කාලාමෝ කපිලවත්ථුම්හා පක්කාමි. යං කපිලවත්ථුම්හා පක්කාමි තථා පක්කන්තෝව අහෝසි න පුන පච්චාගච්ඡීති.
Then it occurred to Bharaṇḍu, “The Buddha has rebuked me three times in front of this illustrious Mahānāma. Why don’t I leave Kapilavatthu?” Then Bharaṇḍu the Kālāma left Kapilavatthu, never to return.
