A Heap of the Unskillful
“อกุสลราสีติ, ภิกฺขเว, วทมาโน ปญฺจ นีวรเณ สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺยฯ เกวโล หายํ, ภิกฺขเว, อกุสลราสิ ยทิทํ ปญฺจ นีวรณาฯ กตเม ปญฺจ? กามจฺฉนฺทนีวรณํ, พฺยาปาทนีวรณํ, ถินมิทฺธนีวรณํ, อุทฺธจฺจกุกฺกุจฺจนีวรณํ, วิจิกิจฺฉานีวรณํฯ อกุสลราสีติ, ภิกฺขเว, วทมาโน อิเม ปญฺจ นีวรเณ สมฺมา วทมาโน วเทยฺยฯ เกวโล หายํ, ภิกฺขเว, อกุสลราสิ ยทิทํ ปญฺจ นีวรณา”ติฯ
“Bhikkhus, rightly speaking, you’d call the five hindrances a ‘heap of the unskillful’. For these five hindrances are entirely a heap of the unskillful. What five? The hindrances of sensual desire, ill will, dullness and drowsiness, restlessness and remorse, and doubt. Rightly speaking, you’d call these five hindrances a ‘heap of the unskillful’. For these five hindrances are entirely a heap of the unskillful.”
