There Venerable Ānanda addressed the bhikkhus …

“දුස්සීලස්ස, ආවුසෝ, සීලවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති අවිප්පටිසාරෝ, අවිප්පටිසාරේ අසති අවිප්පටිසාරවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති පාමෝජ්ජං, පාමෝජ්ජේ අසති පාමෝජ්ජවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසා හෝති පීති, පීතියා අසති පීතිවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසා හෝති පස්සද්ධි, පස්සද්ධියා අසති පස්සද්ධිවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති සුඛං, සුඛේ අසති සුඛවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති සම්මාසමාධි, සම්මාසමාධිම්හි අසති සම්මාසමාධිවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං, යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ අසති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසා හෝති නිබ්බිදා, නිබ්බිදාය අසති නිබ්බිදාවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති විරාගෝ, විරාගේ අසති විරාගවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.

“An unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for not having regrets. When there are regrets, one who has regrets has destroyed a vital condition for joy. When there is no delight, one who lacks delight has destroyed a vital condition for (mental) joy. When there is no (mental) joy, one who lacks (mental) joy has destroyed a vital condition for tranquility. When there is no tranquility, one who lacks tranquility has destroyed a vital condition for (bodily) pleasure. When there is no (bodily) pleasure, one who lacks (bodily) pleasure has destroyed a vital condition for right samādhi. When there is no right samādhi, one who lacks right samādhi has destroyed a vital condition for true knowledge and vision. When there is no true knowledge and vision, one who lacks true knowledge and vision has destroyed a vital condition for disillusionment. When there is no disillusionment, one who lacks disillusionment has destroyed a vital condition for dispassion. When there is no dispassion, one who lacks dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

සේය්‍යථාපි, ආවුසෝ, රුක්ඛෝ සාඛාපලාසවිපන්නෝ. තස්ස පපටිකාපි න පාරිපූරිං ගච්ඡති, තචෝපි … ඵේග්ගුපි … සාරෝපි න පාරිපූරිං ගච්ඡති.

Suppose there was a tree that lacked branches and foliage. Its shoots, bark, softwood, and heartwood would not grow to fullness.

ඒවමේවං ඛෝ, ආවුසෝ, දුස්සීලස්ස සීලවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසෝ හෝති අවිප්පටිසාරෝ, අවිප්පටිසාරේ අසති අවිප්පටිසාරවිපන්නස්ස හතූපනිසං හෝති පාමෝජ්ජං …පේ… විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.

In the same way, an unethical person, who lacks ethics, has destroyed a vital condition for having no regrets. When there are regrets, one who has regrets has destroyed a vital condition for joy. … When there is no dispassion, one who lacks dispassion has destroyed a vital condition for knowledge and vision of freedom.

සීලවතෝ, ආවුසෝ, සීලසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති අවිප්පටිසාරෝ, අවිප්පටිසාරේ සති අවිප්පටිසාරසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති පාමෝජ්ජං, පාමෝජ්ජේ සති පාමෝජ්ජසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නා හෝති පීති, පීතියා සති පීතිසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නා හෝති පස්සද්ධි, පස්සද්ධියා සති පස්සද්ධිසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති සුඛං, සුඛේ සති සුඛසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති සම්මාසමාධි, සම්මාසමාධිම්හි සති සම්මාසමාධිසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනං, යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනේ සති යථාභූතඤාණදස්සනසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නා හෝති නිබ්බිදා, නිබ්බිදාය සති නිබ්බිදාසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නෝ හෝති විරාගෝ, විරාගේ සති විරාගසම්පන්නස්ස උපනිසසම්පන්නං හෝති විමුත්තිඤාණදස්සනං.
