3. Unsurpassable
သာမကသုတ္တ
At Sāma Village
ဧကံ သမယံ ဘဂဝါ သက္ကေသု ဝိဟရတိ သာမဂါမကေ ပေါက္ခရဏိယာယံ၊
At one time the Buddha was staying in the land of the Sakyans near the little village of Sāma, by a lotus pond.
အထ ခေါ အညတရာ ဒေဝတာ အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ အဘိက္ကန္တဝဏ္ဏာ ကေဝလကပ္ပံ ပေါက္ခရဏိယံ ဩဘာသေတွာ ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌာသိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ သာ ဒေဝတာ ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: “တယောမေ, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော ပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊ ကတမေ တယော? ကမ္မာရာမတာ, ဘဿာရာမတာ, နိဒ္ဒါရာမတာ—ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တယော ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော ပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တီ”တိ၊
Then, late at night, a glorious deity, lighting up the entire lotus pond, went up to the Buddha, bowed, stood to one side, and said to him, “Sir, three qualities lead to the decline of a bhikkhu. What three? Relishing work, talk, and sleep. These three qualities lead to the decline of a bhikkhu.”
ဣဒမဝေါစ သာ ဒေဝတာ၊ သမနုညော သတ္ထာ အဟောသိ၊ အထ ခေါ သာ ဒေဝတာ “သမနုညော မေ သတ္ထာ”တိ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယိ၊
That’s what that deity said, and the teacher approved. Then that deity, knowing that the teacher approved, bowed, and respectfully circled the Buddha, keeping him on his right, before vanishing right there.
အထ ခေါ ဘဂဝါ တဿာ ရတ္တိယာ အစ္စယေန ဘိက္ခူ အာမန္တေသိ: “ဣမံ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ရတ္တိံ အညတရာ ဒေဝတာ အဘိက္ကန္တာယ ရတ္တိယာ အဘိက္ကန္တဝဏ္ဏာ ကေဝလကပ္ပံ ပေါက္ခရဏိယံ ဩဘာသေတွာ ယေနာဟံ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ မံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ အဋ္ဌာသိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ ဌိတာ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သာ ဒေဝတာ မံ ဧတဒဝေါစ: ‘တယောမေ, ဘန္တေ, ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော ပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တိ၊ ကတမေ တယော? ကမ္မာရာမတာ, ဘဿာရာမတာ, နိဒ္ဒါရာမတာ—ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, တယော ဓမ္မာ ဘိက္ခုနော ပရိဟာနာယ သံဝတ္တန္တီ'တိ၊
Then, when the night had passed, the Buddha told the bhikkhus all that had happened, adding:
ဣဒမဝေါစ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, သာ ဒေဝတာ၊ ဣဒံ ဝတွာ မံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ပဒက္ခိဏံ ကတွာ တတ္ထေဝန္တရဓာယိ၊ တေသံ ဝေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အလာဘာ တေသံ ဒုလ္လဒ္ဓံ, ယေ ဝေါ ဒေဝတာပိ ဇာနန္တိ ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ ပရိဟာယမာနေ၊ အပရေပိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တယော ပရိဟာနိယေ ဓမ္မေ ဒေသေဿာမိ၊ တံ သုဏာထ, သာဓုကံ မနသိ ကရောထ, ဘာသိဿာမီ”တိ၊
“It’s unfortunate for those of you who even the deities know are declining in skillful qualities. I will teach you three more qualities that lead to decline. Listen and apply your mind well, I will speak.”
“ဧဝံ, ဘန္တေ”တိ ခေါ တေ ဘိက္ခူ ဘဂဝတော ပစ္စဿောသုံ၊ ဘဂဝါ ဧတဒဝေါစ:
“Yes, sir,” they replied. The Buddha said this:
“ကတမေ စ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တယော ပရိဟာနိယာ ဓမ္မာ? သင်္ဂဏိကာရာမတာ, ဒေါဝစဿတာ, ပါပမိတ္တတာ—ဣမေ ခေါ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, တယော ပရိဟာနိယာ ဓမ္မာ၊
“And what, bhikkhus, are three qualities that lead to decline? Enjoyment of company, being hard to admonish, and having bad friends. These three qualities lead to decline.
ယေ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အတီတမဒ္ဓါနံ ပရိဟာယိံသု ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ, သဗ္ဗေတေ ဣမေဟေဝ ဆဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ ပရိဟာယိံသု ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ၊ ယေပိ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, အနာဂတမဒ္ဓါနံ ပရိဟာယိဿန္တိ ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ, သဗ္ဗေတေ ဣမေဟေဝ ဆဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ ပရိဟာယိဿန္တိ ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ၊ ယေပိ ဟိ ကေစိ, ဘိက္ခဝေ, ဧတရဟိ ပရိဟာယန္တိ ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ, သဗ္ဗေတေ ဣမေဟေဝ ဆဟိ ဓမ္မေဟိ ပရိဟာယန္တိ ကုသလေဟိ ဓမ္မေဟီ”တိ၊
Whether in the past, future, or present, all those who decline in skillful qualities do so because of these six qualities.”
