In the Sky (1st)
“सेय्यथापि, भिक्खवे, आकासे विविधा वाता वायन्ति। पुरत्थिमापि वाता वायन्ति, पच्छिमापि वाता वायन्ति, उत्तरापि वाता वायन्ति, दक्खिणापि वाता वायन्ति, सरजापि वाता वायन्ति, अरजापि वाता वायन्ति, सीतापि वाता वायन्ति, उण्हापि वाता वायन्ति, परित्तापि वाता वायन्ति, अधिमत्तापि वाता वायन्ति।
“Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, ākāse vividhā vātā vāyanti. Puratthimāpi vātā vāyanti, pacchimāpi vātā vāyanti, uttarāpi vātā vāyanti, dakkhiṇāpi vātā vāyanti, sarajāpi vātā vāyanti, arajāpi vātā vāyanti, sītāpi vātā vāyanti, uṇhāpi vātā vāyanti, parittāpi vātā vāyanti, adhimattāpi vātā vāyanti.
“Bhikkhus, various winds blow in the sky. Winds blow from the east, the west, the north, and the south. There are winds that are dusty and dustless, cool and warm, weak and strong.
एवमेव खो, भिक्खवे, इमस्मिं कायस्मिं विविधा वेदना उप्पज्जन्ति, सुखापि वेदना उप्पज्जति, दुक्खापि वेदना उप्पज्जति, अदुक्खमसुखापि वेदना उप्पज्जतीति।
Evameva kho, bhikkhave, imasmiṁ kāyasmiṁ vividhā vedanā uppajjanti, sukhāpi vedanā uppajjati, dukkhāpi vedanā uppajjati, adukkhamasukhāpi vedanā uppajjatīti.
In the same way, various feelings arise in this body: pleasant, painful, and neutral feelings.
यथापि वाता आकासे, वायन्ति विविधा पुथू; पुरत्थिमा पच्छिमा चापि, उत्तरा अथ दक्खिणा।
Yathāpi vātā ākāse, vāyanti vividhā puthū; Puratthimā pacchimā cāpi, uttarā atha dakkhiṇā.
There are many and various winds that blow in the sky. From the east they come, also the west, the north, and then the south.
सरजा अरजा चपि, सीता उण्हा च एकदा; अधिमत्ता परित्ता च, पुथू वायन्ति मालुता।
Sarajā arajā capi, sītā uṇhā ca ekadā; Adhimattā parittā ca, puthū vāyanti mālutā.
They are dusty and dustless, cool and sometimes warm, strong and weak; these are the different breezes that blow.
तथेविमस्मिं कायस्मिं, समुप्पज्जन्ति वेदना; सुखदुक्खसमुप्पत्ति, अदुक्खमसुखा च या।
Tathevimasmiṁ kāyasmiṁ, samuppajjanti vedanā; Sukhadukkhasamuppatti, adukkhamasukhā ca yā.
So too, in this body feelings arise, pleasant and painful, and those that are neutral.
यतो च भिक्खु आतापी, सम्पजञ्ञं न रिञ्चति; ततो सो वेदना सब्बा, परिजानाति पण्डितो।
Yato ca bhikkhu ātāpī, sampajaññaṁ na riñcati; Tato so vedanā sabbā, parijānāti paṇḍito.
But when a bhikkhu is keen, not neglecting focused awareness, that astute person understands all feelings.
सो वेदना परिञ्ञाय, दिट्ठे धम्मे अनासवो; कायस्स भेदा धम्मट्ठो, सङ्ख्यं नोपेति वेदगू”ति।
So vedanā pariññāya, diṭṭhe dhamme anāsavo; Kāyassa bhedā dhammaṭṭho, saṅkhyaṁ nopeti vedagū”ti.
Completely understanding feelings, they’re without defilements in this very life. That knowledge master is firm in principle; when their body breaks up, they can’t be reckoned.”
