3. The Explanation of the Hundred and Eight

အညတရဘိက္ခုသုတ္တ

With a Bhikkhu

အထ ခေါ အညတရော ဘိက္ခု ယေန ဘဂဝါ တေနုပသင်္ကမိ; ဥပသင်္ကမိတွာ ဘဂဝန္တံ အဘိဝါဒေတွာ ဧကမန္တံ နိသီဒိ၊ ဧကမန္တံ နိသိန္နော ခေါ သော ဘိက္ခု ဘဂဝန္တံ ဧတဒဝေါစ:

Then a bhikkhu went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:

“ကတမာ နု ခေါ, ဘန္တေ, ဝေဒနာ, ကတမော ဝေဒနာသမုဒယော, ကတမာ ဝေဒနာသမုဒယဂါမိနီ ပဋိပဒါ? ကတမော ဝေဒနာနိရောဓော, ကတမာ ဝေဒနာနိရောဓဂါမိနီ ပဋိပဒါ? ကော ဝေဒနာယ အဿာဒေါ, ကော အာဒီနဝေါ, ကိံ နိဿရဏန်”တိ?

“Sir, what is feeling? What’s the origin of feeling? What’s the practice that leads to the origin of feeling? What’s the cessation of feeling? What’s the practice that leads to the cessation of feeling? And what is feeling’s gratification, drawback, and escape?”

“တိဿော ဣမာ, ဘိက္ခု, ဝေဒနာ—သုခါ ဝေဒနာ, ဒုက္ခာ ဝေဒနာ, အဒုက္ခမသုခါ ဝေဒနာ၊ ဣမာ ဝုစ္စန္တိ, ဘိက္ခု, ဝေဒနာ၊

“Bhikkhu, there are these three feelings: pleasant, painful, and neutral. These are called feeling.

ဖဿသမုဒယာ ဝေဒနာသမုဒယော၊ တဏှာ ဝေဒနာသမုဒယဂါမိနီ ပဋိပဒါ၊

Feeling originates from contact. Craving is the practice that leads to the origin of feeling.

ဖဿနိရောဓာ ဝေဒနာနိရောဓော၊ အယမေဝ အရိယော အဋ္ဌင်္ဂိကော မဂ္ဂေါ ဝေဒနာနိရောဓဂါမိနီ ပဋိပဒါ, သေယျထိဒံ—သမ္မာဒိဋ္ဌိ …ပေ… သမ္မာသမာဓိ၊

When contact ceases, feeling ceases. The practice that leads to the cessation of feelings is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi.

ယံ ဝေဒနံ ပဋိစ္စ ဥပ္ပဇ္ဇတိ သုခံ သောမနဿံ, အယံ ဝေဒနာယ အဿာဒေါ;

The pleasure and happiness that arise from feeling: this is its gratification.

ယံ ဝေဒနာ အနိစ္စာ ဒုက္ခာ ဝိပရိဏာမဓမ္မာ, အယံ ဝေဒနာယ အာဒီနဝေါ;

That feeling is impermanent, suffering, and perishable: this is its drawback.

ယော ဝေဒနာယ ဆန္ဒရာဂဝိနယော ဆန္ဒရာဂပ္ပဟာနံ, ဣဒံ ဝေဒနာယ နိဿရဏန်”တိ၊

Removing and giving up desire and greed for feeling: this is its escape.”
