“सतिपट्ठानञ्च वो, भिक्खवे, देसेस्सामि सतिपट्ठानभावनञ्च सतिपट्ठानभावनागामिनिञ्च पटिपदं। तं सुणाथ।

“Satipaṭṭhānañca vo, bhikkhave, desessāmi satipaṭṭhānabhāvanañca satipaṭṭhānabhāvanāgāminiñca paṭipadaṁ. Taṁ suṇātha.

“Bhikkhus, I will teach you mindfulness meditation, the development of mindfulness meditation, and the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation. Listen …

कतमञ्च, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानं? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु काये कायानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं; वेदनासु वेदनानुपस्सी विहरति …पे… चित्ते चित्तानुपस्सी विहरति …पे… धम्मेसु धम्मानुपस्सी विहरति आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। इदं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानं।

Katamañca, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānaṁ? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu kāye kāyānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ; vedanāsu vedanānupassī viharati …pe… citte cittānupassī viharati …pe… dhammesu dhammānupassī viharati ātāpī sampajāno satimā, vineyya loke abhijjhādomanassaṁ. Idaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānaṁ.

And what is mindfulness meditation? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates by watching, again and again, an aspect of the body—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They meditate watching, again and again, an aspect of feelings … mind … principles—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. This is called mindfulness meditation.

कतमा च, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानभावना? इध, भिक्खवे, भिक्खु समुदयधम्मानुपस्सी कायस्मिं विहरति, वयधम्मानुपस्सी कायस्मिं विहरति, समुदयवयधम्मानुपस्सी कायस्मिं विहरति, आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। समुदयधम्मानुपस्सी वेदनासु विहरति …पे… समुदयधम्मानुपस्सी चित्ते विहरति …पे… समुदयधम्मानुपस्सी धम्मेसु विहरति, वयधम्मानुपस्सी धम्मेसु विहरति, समुदयवयधम्मानुपस्सी धम्मेसु विहरति, आतापी सम्पजानो सतिमा, विनेय्य लोके अभिज्झादोमनस्सं। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानभावना।

Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānabhāvanā.

And what is the development of mindfulness meditation? It’s when a bhikkhu meditates watching, again and again, the body as liable to originate, as liable to vanish, and as liable to originate and vanish—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. They are watching, again and again, an aspect of feelings … mind … principles as liable to originate, as liable to vanish, and as liable to originate and vanish—keen, aware, and mindful, rid of covetousness and displeasure for the world. This is called the development of mindfulness meditation.

कतमा च, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानभावनागामिनी पटिपदा? अयमेव अरियो अट्ठङ्गिको मग्गो, सेय्यथिदं—सम्मादिट्ठि, सम्मासङ्कप्पो, सम्मावाचा, सम्माकम्मन्तो, सम्माआजीवो, सम्मावायामो, सम्मासति, सम्मासमाधि। अयं वुच्चति, भिक्खवे, सतिपट्ठानभावनागामिनी पटिपदा”ति।

Katamā ca, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā? Ayameva ariyo aṭṭhaṅgiko maggo, seyyathidaṁ—sammādiṭṭhi, sammāsaṅkappo, sammāvācā, sammākammanto, sammāājīvo, sammāvāyāmo, sammāsati, sammāsamādhi. Ayaṁ vuccati, bhikkhave, satipaṭṭhānabhāvanāgāminī paṭipadā”ti.

And what is the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation? It is simply this noble eightfold path, that is: right view, right thought, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, and right samādhi. This is called the practice that leads to the development of mindfulness meditation.”

Tassuddānaṁ

अननुस्सुतं विरागो, विरद्धो भावना सति; अञ्ञा छन्दं परिञ्ञाय, भावना विभङ्गेन चाति।

Ananussutaṁ virāgo, viraddho bhāvanā sati; Aññā chandaṁ pariññāya, bhāvanā vibhaṅgena cāti.
